Molecular characterization of cucumber mosaic virus isolates infecting ornamental species cultivated in the botanical garden of Bologna university.

During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. This paper, based on transaction costs theory, represents a contribution to the existing literature, and a first step towards a more in depth study, aimed to identify the more important transaction costs able to influence the strategic choices of firms. In particular, this approach has been used to evaluate, through a telephone survey, the influence of transaction costs on the sale channels choice made by a small sample of Sicilian firms active in the Ornamental Plants economic sub-sector. Questa xenofita viene segnalata per la prima volta in diverse aree delle province di Agrigento, Palermo e Trapani, dopo essere stata segnalata per la prima volta presso l'isola di Linosa, nell'arcipelago delle Pelagie.

Dracaena draco (Dracaenaceae), naturalized in Palermo (N Sicily). – Dracaena draco L., an evergreen tree from the Atlantic islands (Canary, Cape verde and Madera Islands) introduced in Sicily in the second half of the XIX Century as an ornamental plant, was found naturalized on the Mount Pellegrino slopes (Palermo). This new Sicilian finding, confirms, more than 20 years after the first record in the East Cost of Sicily, the naturalization of the species in Italy.

The ornamental flora of parks and gardens, as we know, generally includes high proportions of exotics. In Italy it arose from Renaissance on and increasingly enriched up to include a large proportion of exotics native to countries under Mediterranean and temperate climates. Similarly the garden flora of Sicily has a large number of mostly Mediterranean and subtropical exotics. Even if very similar on the whole, these floras differ in some floristic, biological and ecological features. The first record of Aesculus hippocastanum naturalized in Sicily is presented from a locality near the Alcantara river (Floresta, Messina) in the montane belt where decidous Turkey oak and chestnut woods are found. This species is not frequently cultivated in Sicily. In that locality several mature individuals likely introduced several decades ago occur.
