Definition of diagonal Poisson's ratio and elastic modulus for infill masonry walls
2014
The prediction of the response of infilled frames through the simplified approach of substituting the infill with an equivalent pin-jointed strut is treated. In this framework the results of an experimental study for the mechanical characterization of different types of masonry infills having the aim of estimating strength, Young modulus and Poisson's ratio are presented. Four types of masonry were investigated and subjected to ordinary compressive tests orthogonally to the mortar beds and along the directions of the mortar beds. The experimental campaign confirmed the possibility of using an orthotropic plate model for prediction of the Poisson's ratio and Young modulus along the diagonal …
Risk of failure in existing RC balcony and strength verification under degradation phenomena
2020
Abstract In the present paper, the safety conditions of reinforced concrete (RC) balconies subject to degradation phenomena caused by carbonation, presence of chlorides or water infiltration were examined. After a brief review of the typical damages of balconies occurring with detachments of plaster and bricks expulsion, some cases of collapses of balconies recently occurred were presented. Therefore, a calculation model was proposed for a hand verification of the flexural and shear strength of existing corroded T beams cast in place of lightened RC orthotropic slabs forming the balcony and for the calculus of deflection including slippage of steel bars. Diffused and pitting corrosion on st…
On the influence of orientation upon the mechanical behavior of oakwood in a general state of stress
1995
Influence of orientation upon the mechanical behavior of oakwood has been studied. The approach within anisotropic medias mechanics supposes oakwood orthotropic with three orthogonal symmetry axes considered to be the privileged directions that occur during the growth of oaktree. Experimental tests consisted in compression tests under confining pressure realized on cylindric samples of oakwood chopped in 18 privileged directions. Although well known in solid mechanics, our approach is original in mechanics and rheology of wood. The obtained results disclosed an influence of the confining pressure upon the mechanical behavior of oakwood and its anisotropy including different types of anisotr…
Mechanical behavior of a sandwich with corrugated GRP core: numerical modeling and experimental validation
2014
In this work the mechanical behaviour of a core reinforced composite sandwich structure is studied. The sandwich employs a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) orthotropic material for both the two external skins and the inner core web. In particular, the core is designed in order to cooperate with the GRP skins in membrane and flexural properties by means of the addition of a corrugated laminate into the foam core. An analytical model has been developed to replace a unit cell of this structure with an orthotropic equivalent thick plate that reproduces the in plane and out of plane behaviour of the original geometry. Different validation procedures have been implemented to verify the quality of t…
Numerical investigation of the mechanical properties of a novel hybrid polymer composite reinforced with graphene and MXene nanosheets
2020
Abstract This paper presents a numerical investigation of the elastic properties of a novel hybrid polymer composite reinforced with graphene and MXene nanosheets. A finite element computational model was developed to analyze the mechanical properties of a new polymer hybrid composite reinforced with MXene and graphene taking into account the properties of the 2D nanosheets, different aspect ratios, placement options and volume fractions of nanoreinforcements, as well as the interaction effects between the nanofillers and the surrounding polymer matrix. Using the developed numerical model, the influences of the interface layer properties, MXene and graphene aspect ratio, alignment and volum…
Response of Cross-Ply Composite to Off-Axis Loading
2002
Polymer composites are known to exhibit nonlinear stress–strain response due to nonlinearly elastic or plastic deformation of the matrix and damage accumulation. Mechanistic modeling of material response explicitly accounting for these interacting factors often leads to complex theories. Plasticity theory formalism provides an alternative for nonlinear deformation description of composite material. We examine the applicability of an orthotropic plasticity model, developed by Sun et al. for unidirectionally reinforced composite, to composite laminate. The response of a symmetric and balanced cross-ply glass/epoxy laminate is studied under uniaxial tensile loading at different angles to the …
An Equivalent Orthotropic Representation of the Nonlinear Elastic Behavior of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes
2006
An equivalent orthotropic representation (EOR) of the nonlinear elastic behavior of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was developed based on a nested shell structural representation of MWCNTs. The EOR model was used together with the finite element method to simulate the large deformation of MWCNTs under bending, axial compression and radial compression. Results were compared with those of the nested shell model for four-, eight-, nine-, 14-, and 19-walled carbon nanotubes. The EOR model provides a dramatic improvement in computational efficiency and successfully quantitatively replicates the overall deformation behavior including the initial linear elastic behavior, the onset of local …
Creep and damage accumulation in orthotropic composites under cyclic loading
1998
Experimental results and theoretical prediction of the response of glassfiber-reinforced polyester under quasi-static, static (creep), and cyclic (fatigue) loading are presented. The nonlinear strain component at static loading and the strain amplitude rate at cyclic off-axis loading of an orthotropic composite are shown to follow the associated flow rule with a single-parameter quadratic potential function. The influence of fatigue damage on deformation is considerable due to the reduction in the elastic modulus of the composite and is apparently negligible with respect to its effect on the parameters of the creep kernel.
On the Effect of Interference Fits in Composite Pin-Joints
1999
The Finite Element Method is used to determine the effect of pin/hole interference fits on the elastic membranal behavior of an orthotropic plate loaded in tension through a pin. A complete contact analysis is performed to handle the nonlinear contact problem. The study encompasses two levels of interference fits, two degrees of anisotropy of the plate, and two load levels. Friction effects are not included. Experimental results from Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry are also presented. It is shown that the stress changes in the plate vary linearly with load when no pin/plate separation occurs. It is also shown that interference fits can have beneficial effects on the static and fatig…
Analysis of Rectangular Orthotropic Membranes for Mechanical Properties Identification through Load-Displacement Data
2021
In this paper, an innovative procedure is introduced for the identification of the mechanical properties of orthotropic membranes based on load-displacement data. To this end, novel functional forms of the displacement components for rectangular membranes are appropriately introduced. Unknown coefficients of these displacement functions are determined, minimizing the total potential energy of the membrane. The energy method is then combined with an optimization procedure to estimate the elastic constants of the membranes in a straightforward manner. Specifically, a genetic algorithm is used to minimize a properly defined objective function directly related to the sought mechanical propertie…
