The publication of the Normes ortográfiques de l'IEC (1913) and its adoption in the entire linguistic region in 1932 in the Valencian Country with the so-called Normes de Castelló was the result of a process in which differing spelling norms had to be standardized. The author examines in detail the norms used in several popular and dialectic magazines published in Barcelona (La Esquella de la Torratxa), Valencia (El Micalet de Valensia) and Palma de Majorca (En Figuera).

Parental Teaching of Reading and Spelling Across the Transition From Kindergarten to Grade 1

We investigated the longitudinal links between parental teaching of reading and spelling and children’s word reading and spelling skills. Data of 244 Lithuanian parent–child dyads were analyzed, who were followed across three time points: end of kindergarten (T1; Mage = 6.88; 116 girls), beginning of Grade 1 (T2), and end of Grade 1 (T3). The children’s word reading and spelling skills were tested, and the parents answered questionnaires on the frequency with which they taught their children reading and spelling. Caratteri maiuscoli e minuscoli costituiscono in tutte le lingue un inventario parallelo di grafemi cui si ricorre per la realizzazione grafica dei fonemi, e la cui differenziazione funzionale si è sviluppata nel corso dei secoli. Oggi la grafia non marcata è costituita nella generalità dei casi dal carattere minuscolo, avendo specularmente assunto il maiuscolo funzioni aggiuntive. Esso non rappresenta solo la realizzazione grafica del fonema, ma assolve a più funzioni su altri piani del sistema della lingua. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten sujuvasti neljännen luokan oppilaat lukevat, ja millaisia taustataitoja sujuva lukeminen edellyttää. Tutkimukseen osallistui 85 neljännen luokan oppilasta. Oppilaat tekivät erilaisia kielellisiä ja kognitiivisia taitoja mittaavia tehtäväsarjoja, joiden tuloksia verrattiin lukemistestien tuloksiin. Lukemissujuvuuden muuttujina tutkimuksessa käytettiin sanojen ja epäsanojen lukemista sekä kahden lyhyen tekstin lukemiseen käytettyä aikaa. Tehtäväsarjojen avulla tutkittiin nopean sarjallisen nimeämisen, artikulaationopeuden, prosessointinopeuden, yleisen kykytason ja visuaalisen tunnistamisen yhteyttä lukemistesteissä menestymiseen. The twentieth century has been for the German orthography a period of several studies and discussions which gave scientific foundation to the 1996 spelling reform. There were plenty of public and private initiatives which, by involving an constantly increasing number of writers into the debates, tried to simplify the spelling to a more rational regulation. This essay focuses on the discussion in the late Fifties and especially on two reform projects: the Stuttgarter (1954) and the Wiesbadener Empfehlungen (1958).
