Solar neutrino problem accounting for self-consistent magnetohydrodynamics solution for solar magnetic fields

2001

The analysis of the resonant spin-flavour (RSF) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the framework of simplest analytic solutions to the solar magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations is presented. We performed the global fit of the recent solar neutrino data, including event rates as well as day and night recoil electron spectra induced by solar neutrino interactions in SuperKamiokande. We compare quantitatively our simplest MHD-RSF fit with vacuum oscillation (VAC) and MSW--type (SMA, LMA and LOW) solutions to the solar neutrino problem using a common well-calibrated theoretical calculation and fit procedure and find MHD-RSF fit to be somewhat better than those obtained for the favored…

Constraining Majorana neutrino electromagnetic properties from the LMA-MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem

2002

In this paper we use solar neutrino data to derive stringent bounds on Majorana neutrino transition moments (TMs). Should such be present, they would contribute to the neutrino--electron scattering cross section and hence alter the signal observed in Super-Kamiokande. Motivated by the growing robustness of the LMA-MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem indicated by recent data, and also by the prospects of its possible confirmation at KamLAND, we assume the validity of this solution, and we constrain neutrino TMs by using the latest global solar neutrino data. We find that all elements of the TM matrix can be bounded at the same time. Furthermore, we show how reactor data play a complem…

Neutrino mixing with revamped A(4) flavor symmetry

2013

We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A(4) flavor model that can induce a nonzero theta(13) value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta(23) and the magnitude of theta(13) leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino-oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta(23) in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly comment on other phenomenological features of the model.

Relic Neutrino Decoupling Including Flavour Oscillations

2005

In the early universe, neutrinos are slightly coupled when electron-positron pairs annihilate transferring their entropy to photons. This process originates non-thermal distortions on the neutrino spectra which depend on neutrino flavour, larger for nu_e than for nu_mu or nu_tau. We study the effect of three-neutrino flavour oscillations on the process of neutrino decoupling by solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino spectra. We find that oscillations do not essentially modify the total change in the neutrino energy density, giving N_eff=3.046 in terms of the effective number of neutrinos, while the small effect over the production of primordial 4He is increased by…

SU(5)-inspired double beta decay

2015

The short-range part of the neutrinoless double beta amplitude is generated via the exchange of exotic particles, such as charged scalars, leptoquarks and/or diquarks. In order to give a sizable contribution to the total decay rate, the masses of these exotics should be of the order of (at most) a few TeV. Here, we argue that these exotics could be the “light” (i.e., weak-scale) remnants of some B – L violating variants of SU(5). We show that unification of the standard model gauge couplings, consistent with proton decay limits, can be achieved in such a setup without the need to introduce supersymmetry. Since these nonminimal SU(5)-inspired models violate B – L, they generate Majorana neut…

Extended Black Box Theorem for Lepton Number and Flavor Violating processes

2006

We revisit the well known "Black Box" theorem establishing a fundamental relation between the amplitude of neutrinoless double beta decay and the effective Majorana neutrino mass. We extend this theorem to the general case of arbitrary lepton number and lepton flavor violating (LFNV) processes and to the three generation Majorana neutrino mass matrix. We demonstrate the existence of a general set of one-to-one correspondence relations between the effective operators generating these processes, and elements of the neutrino mass matrix, such that if one of these two quantities vanishes the other is guaranteed to vanish as well, and moreover, if one of these quantities is non-zero the other is…

Solar neutrinos as probes of neutrino–matter interactions

2004

Data from solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments have led to a discovery of nonzero neutrino masses. Here we investigate what these data can tell us about neutrino interactions with matter, including the poorly constrained flavor-changing nu_e-nu_tau interactions. We give examples of the interaction parameters that are excluded by the solar/KamLAND data and are beyond the reach of other experiments. We also demonstrate that flavor-changing interactions, at the allowed level, may profoundly modify the conversion probability for neutrinos of energy <~ 6 MeV and the values of the mass parameter inferred from the data. The implications for future experiments are discussed.

Mass of tau neutrino in SO(10) GUT-s

1997

We investigate the allowed ranges of masses for an unstable tau neutrino in the context of SO(10) GUT-s. In light of the new nucleosynthesis results we obtain that there is a narrow window for m_{\nu_\tau} where the LEP, neutrino oscillation and nucleosynthesis data are compatible. This window, which depends on the effective number of neutrinos contributing to nucleosynthesis, has important cosmological consequences and will be tested by ongoing neutrino oscillation and LEP II experiments.

Neutrinos that violate CPT, and the experiments that love them

2002

Recently we proposed a framework for explaining the observed evidence for neutrino oscillations without enlarging the neutrino sector, by introducing CPT violating Dirac masses for the neutrinos. In this paper we continue the exploration of the phenomenology of CPT violation in the neutrino sector. We show that our CPT violating model fits the existing SuperKamiokande data at least as well as the standard atmospheric neutrino oscillation models. We discuss the challenge of measuring CP violation in a neutrino sector that also violates CPT. We point out that the proposed off-axis extension of MINOS looks especially promising in this regard. Finally, we describe a method to compute CPT violat…
