Acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human olfactory functioning.
2004
Background Animal experiments indicate that 1,1,1-trichloroethane can cause degeneration of the olfactory epithelium. The effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human odor perception still have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to learn more about acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Methods Twelve healthy, nonsmoking students were exposed to 200 and 20 ppm (control) 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber for 4 hours according to a crossover design. Olfactory functioning was investigated with the Sniffin’ Sticks. The test includes the determination of the detection threshold for n-butanol and an odor identification test. Results After 1 hour of exposure to 200 ppm 1,1,…
Olfactory training is helpful in postinfectious olfactory loss: A randomized, controlled, multicenter study
2013
Objectives/Hypothesis: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of olfactory training (OT) on olfactory function in patients with persistent postinfectious olfactory dysfunction (PIOD). Study Design: Randomized, single-blind, controlled, multicenter crossover study. Methods: Twelve tertiary university medical centers participated. Investigations were performed at three visits (base- line, after 18 weeks, and after 36 weeks), including only subjects with PIOD of <24-months duration. At each visit, partici- pants received detailed assessment of olfactory function. Seventy subjects trained with high concentrations of four odors for 18 weeks; the other half (n 5 74) trained with low co…

Solid- and solution-state studies of the novel mu-dicyanamide-bridged dinuclear spin-crossover system {[(Fe(bztpen)]2[mu-N(CN)2]}(PF6)3 x n H2O.
2005
The mononuclear diamagnetic compound {Fe(bztpen)[N(CN)2]} (PF6)CH3OH (1) (bztpen = N-benzyl-N,N′,N′- tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine) has been synthesized and its crystal structure studied. Complex 1 can be considered to be the formal pre-cursor of two new dinuclear, dicyanamide-bridged iron(II) complexes with the generic formula {[(Fe(bztpen)]2[μN(CN)2]}(PF6) 3·nH2O (n = 1 (2) or 0 (3)), which have been characterized in the solid state and in solution. In all three complexes, the iron atoms have a distorted [FeN6] octahedral coordination defined by a bztpen ligand and a terminal (1) or a bridging dicyanamide ligand (2 and 3). In the solid state, 2 and 3 can be considered to be molecu …
Interface between work and family: A longitudinal individual and crossover perspective
2010
This study assessed longitudinal individual and crossover relationships between work-family conflict and well-being in the domains of work (job satisfaction) and family (parental distress) in a sample of 239 dual-earner couples. The results revealed only longitudinal individual effects over a 1-year period. First, high family-to-work conflict (WFC) at Time 1 was related to a high level of work-to-family conflict (WFC) 1 year later in both partners. Second, the wife's high level of FWC was related to her decreased job satisfaction 1 year later. Thus, the longitudinal effects identified supported normal causality, that is, work-family conflict led to poor well-being outcomes or increased perc…
Dentoalveolar changes in adults promoted by the use of auxiliary expansion arch: A CBCT study
2019
Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the dentoalveolar effects and the changes of buccal cortical bone in the posterior area after expansion obtained with TMA auxiliary expansion arch in adult patients. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis of CT scans of 13 patients (6 male, 7 female) treated at a private clinic, taken immediately before and after the use of an auxiliary expansion archwire, was performed. Mean age at installation of TMA auxiliary expansion arch was 29.23 years (s.d.=9.13) and the mean age when the auxiliary arch was removed was 29.52 years (s.d.=9.16). Mean time of the use of the TMA auxiliary expansion arch was 0.29 years (s.d.=0.09). The patient…
