Studies on the determinants of migration and the spatial concentration of labour

This thesis consists of five empirical studies which seek to understand the processes behind interregional migration decisions and the spatial concentration of labour. The empirical studies are preceded by an introductory chapter that, among other topics, discusses spatial concentration in Finland between 1980 and 2000, and surveys prior evidence on the determinants of migration. The thesis mainly utilises Finnish longitudinal population census data from 1993?1996. Subjective health literacy among school-aged children

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore Finnish adolescents’ subjective health literacy (HL) in association to school achievement, learning difficulties, educational aspirations, and family affluence. Design/methodology/approach Nationally representative data were collected in Finland as a part of the international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. The respondents consisted in total of 3,833 adolescents (7th and 9th graders) from 359 schools. Is personality related to permanent earnings? Evidence using a twin design

Using twin survey combined with register-based panel data on labor market outcomes, the authors examine the association between personality characteristics and long-term earnings among prime working-age individuals. The long-term earnings were measured over the 1990–2008 period. The sample contains 4,642 twin pairs, of which 53% are females. In contrast to previous studies, this paper uses the within-twin dimension of the data to control for shared family background and confounding genetic factors. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelemme yksilön sosiaalisista verkostoista muodostuvan sosiaalisen pääoman yhteyttä yksilötason tulokehitykseen. Analyysimme perustuvat vuoden 1986 elinolotutkimukseen osallistuneisiin 20–44 vuotiaisiin työllisiin ja rekisteritietoihin heidän palkkatuloistaan vuosilta 1987–1997. Tutkimuksessa erottelemme toisistaan sitovan ja silloittavan sosiaalisen pääoman muodot. Sitovan sosiaalisen pääoman mittarimme perustuu yksilön mahdollisuuteen saada apua verkostoistaan erilaisissa arkielämän tilanteissa. Economic Costs of Obesity in Europe

This chapter summarizes the evidence on the indirect costs of obesity that result from adverse labour market outcomes (i.e., earnings and employment losses) at the individual level. We focus on empirical evidence covering European countries emphasizing the most recent studies in this field. Research has established three key empirical observations. The first fact is that there is a negative link between excess weight and various labour market outcomes. Obesity is linked to significantly lower earnings, lower levels of employment and higher probability of entering sick leave or exiting from paid employment through disability pension. Tämä pro gradu –tutkielma käsittelee toisen maailmansodan jälkeen 20.11.1945−1.10.1946 järjestetyn Nürnbergin kansainvälisen sotarikosoikeudenkäynnin kuvaamista Suomen sanomalehdistössä. Sisällönanalyysillä analysoitu tutkimusaineisto koostuu oikeudenkäyntiä koskevasta kirjoittelusta yhdessätoista sanomalehdessä, joihin kuuluu sekä pääkaupunkiseudun valtalehtiä että pienempiä maakuntalehtiä. Johtavan sanomalehdistön ja maakuntalehtien kirjoittelun aktiivisuudessa oli suuria eroja, joten oikeudenkäynnistä ei syntynyt Suomessa yhtenäistä kuvaa. El presente trabajo tiene carácter descriptivo y es consecuencia de años de servicio en políticas públicas de seguridad; esta experiencia personal ha pasado por el tamiz de la reflexión ética, y al escribirla hemos pretendido reconstruir esa experiencia de trabajo desde la perspectiva de una ética cívica. Esta voluntad de reconstrucción supone en cierto modo una “justicia reparadora” con los verdaderos protagonistas de esta historia: policías y vecinos, todos ciudadanos en un mismo escenario, la España constitucional, que han trabajado por la seguridad ciudadana y la libertad. Atkārtotu sakādisku acu kustību ietekme uz verģences atbildi

Maģistra darbs ir uzrakstīts latviešu valodā uz 40 lapaspusēm. Tas satur 19 attēlus, 5 tabulas un 41 atsauci uz literatūras avotiem. Mērķis: izvērtēt atkārtotu sakādisku acu kustību ietekmi uz verģences atbildi. Metode: Četriem pētījuma dalībniekiem tika analizēts maksimālais verģences ātrums, laiks, kad tiek sasniegts maksimālais verģences ātrums, dubultās verģences un sakāžu skaits pirms un pēc nogurdināšanas. Rezultāti un secinājumi: Nogurums katra pētījuma dalībnieka verģences atbildi ietekmē atšķirīgi. Izteiktākas izmaiņas novērotas diverģences atbildē, kā arī pie lielākiem verģences stimuliem. Atšķirība sakāžu un dubultās verģences skaitā pirms un pēc noguruma netika konstatēta.

Pētījuma mērķis ir novērtēt patērētāju izvēles ietekmējošos faktorus, apzināti izvēloties iegādāties viltotas preces, kā arī izvērtēt institucionālos aspektus cīņā ar viltojumu pieejamību Eiropas Savienības tirgū. Darbs strukturēts trīs nodaļās, aplūkojot patērētāju lēmumu pieņemšanas aspektus, viltojumu tirgus izplatības ekonomisko ietekmi, izpēti noslēdzot ar Latvijas patērētāju anketēšanas rezultātu apkopojumu un analīzi.
