The search for identity in the narrative stylistic and poetic study
2016
This dissertation deals with the quest for narrative identity in four distinct narratives: Le Premier Homme, by Albert Camus; Les Oliviers de la justice, by Jean Pélégri; Ébauche du père, by Jean Sénac; and Outremer, by Morgan Sportes. The authors of these narratives belonged to the community of French people born in Algeria and, later on, to that of the pieds-noirs. The texts examine mainly the end of French Algeria. This accounts for the reference to the years 1954-1962, among other periods of time, and to the tragic consequences these years led to, including exile and uprooting. The designation “French Algeria” in itself contains at least a dual reference to identity, if not referring to…
L’altro e le sue immagini. Note sul soliloquio
2016
The paper examines the soliloquy activity by means of some conceptual artifacts borrowed from three research programs: 1) the Enunciative Narratology of René Rivara; 2) the Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations of Antoine Culioli; 3) the Dialogical Syntax of John Du Bois. It is composed by three parts. In the first one, we discuss some definitions of soliloquy. The second part is devoted to the analysis of some aspects of such activity with particular reference to some language operations: a) laminations of voice; b) construction of the (interior) co-enunciator. Finally, in the last part we examine some questions that remain open in the debate on soliloquy activity.

The notion of physical and moral well-being : relationship and interaction in George Eliot's literary works
2020
This dissertation analyzes the concept of well-being in the writings of George Eliot in order to account for the question of the individual in his/her relationships with the other and others such as animals and the environment so as to obtain physical, moral as well as personal and social well-being along the resulting ethics and aesthetics. For the novelist, well-being finds its source in the individuals’ suffering in British nineteenth-century society. Conceiving well-being from Eliot’s point of view therefore means giving priority to individual relationships and interactions. This relational vision of well-being amounts to considering the social regularities related to community life, th…
La labor silenciosa de lo positivo
2015

'Different' and 'distinct' as markers of otherness: A corpus-driven study of the (re)creation of privilege in high standard hotels.
2020
The present study seeks to offer an understanding of how high-end hotel websites produce privilege, creating a sense of belonging and entitlement for their 4/5-star guests. The experience of tourism is intrinsically linked to embracing otherness, and as a reflection of this, hotel websites offer a characterization of cultural otherness in an attempt to make it resonate with the potential expectations of a socioeconomically privileged client. The study considers the question of what elements of experience of otherness the website will address, relying on a Critical Discourse Analysis perspective and drawing on Bourdieu's notion of habitus as related to lifestyle, difference and distinction. …

The use of the French adjective “malsain” (usually translated in English as “unhealthy,” “unwholesome” or “sick”) to judge a work of art has led me to question the relevance of this metaphor, the way this value is determined, the reasons which lead the subject to consume shocking material and the possibility to distinguish art from mere symptom. I consider the unhealthy, on the one hand, as a relation of transmission which produces an aesthetic based on metaphor and metonymy, and on the other, as a subjective value delivered by a self or a law, and I argue that, as it is entirely discursive, the unhealthy is in effect an uncanny metonymy. I show that the works under study represent and cond…
