Age and metasomatic alteration of the Mt Neill Granite at Nooldoonooldoona Waterhole, Mt Painter Inlier, South Australia

2001

Quartz feldspar augen gneisses, quartz augen schists and trondhjemites outcrop at Nooldoonooldoona Waterhole in the southwestern corner of the Proterozoic Mt Painter Inlier, northern Flinders Ranges, South Australia. These rocks were previously interpreted as having different origins and ages. However, we argue that all rock types were the result of deformation and strong metasomatic alteration of one common precursor: the Mt Neill Granite. Our conclusion is based on field observations that show that the different lithologies grade into each other and that intrusive contacts are lacking. Whole rock major and trace element analyses also point to a common protolith. Finally, Pb/Pb dating of m…

Canal switch and re-entry phenomenon in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: difference between immediate and delayed occurrence

2014

7 pazienti …

Do otolith annular structures correspond to the first freshwater entry for yellow European eelsAnguilla anguillain the Baltic countries?

2010

To examine the relationship between freshwater entry and otolith annular structures, a total of 113 naturally recruited European eels Anguilla anguilla from Lithuania and Latvia that entered fresh water at least once were collected. In some individuals (8.3-11.3%), the first freshwater entry coincided with a dark check that was distinctly different from neighbouring annuli. In most individuals (81.7-84.9%), the first freshwater entry occurred on rings and increments indistinguishable from other annuli. For the remaining individuals (3.8-10%), the first freshwater entry did not correspond to any otolith ring, band or annulus. According to recent evidence, the observed high correspondence bet…

Gentamicin alters nitric oxide production in semicircular canals and otolith organs.

2010

Objectives/Hypothesis: Intratympanic application of gentamicin is an important therapeutic option to control vertigo spells in Meniere's disease. Low doses eliminate the function of semicircular canal ampullae (SCCA) and saccule in most patients, although utricular function is maintained in many cases. Local alteration in free radical production might be responsible for these differences. Therefore, the gentamicin-induced nitric oxide (NO) production was determined in an animal model using separate organ cultures of SCCA, saccule, and utricle. Study Design: Prospective pilot study in male guinea pigs. Methods: SCCA, saccule, and utricle of 28 guinea pigs were isolated and incubated separate…

Insular strokes cause no vestibular deficits.

2013

Background and Purpose— In previous imaging studies, the posterior insular cortex (IC) was identified as an essential part for vestibular otolith perception and considered as a core region of a human vestibular cortical network. However, it is still unknown whether lesions exclusively restricted to the posterior IC suffice to provoke signs of vestibular otolith dysfunction. Thus, present data aimed to test whether patients with lesions restricted to the IC showed vestibular otolith dysfunction. Methods— We studied 10 acute unilateral stroke patients with lesions restricted to the IC which were tested for signs of vestibular otolith dysfunction, such as tilts of subjective visual vertical, …

Wavelength-selective directional coupling with dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides

2009

International audience; We consider wavelength-selective splitting of radiation using directional couplers (DCs) formed by dielectric-loaded surface-plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DCs were fabricated by depositing subwavelength-sized polymer ridges on a gold film using large-scale UV photolithography and characterized at telecommunications wavelengths with near-field microscopy. We demonstrate a DLSPPW-based 45-mu m-long DC comprising 3 mu m offset S bends and 25-mu m-long parallel waveguides that changes from the "through" state at 1500 nm to 3 dB splitting at 1600 nm, and show that a 50.5-mu m-long DC should enable complete separation of the radiation channels at 1400 and 162…

MATERIALS AND PROCESSING ISSUES FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF INTEGRATED PASSIVE AND ACTIVE DEVICES ON FLEXIBLE SUBSTRATES

2008

Plast_ICs is a Public/Private Laboratory funded by Italian Government aimed to build a novel technological platform for the development of flexible electronics, mainly, but not solely, based on thin inorganic films. Integration of different functions, on single and/or multiple plastic foils, to generate a smart system is the final goal of the project. The building blocks of the platform will be presented, starting from the different plastic substrates characterization, going through the development of active devices, such as thin-film- transistors, and passive devices, like thin-film- resistors, capacitors, inductors. Fully inorganic elementary devices, based on optical patterning and in va…

<title>Advances in silica-based glasses for UV and vacuum UV laser optics</title>

2003

The origins of pre-existing and laser-induced ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical absorption in state-of-the-art glassy silicon dioxide and the ways to improve it are reviewed. The main causes of pre-existing absorption in UV/VUV are oxygen vacancies, hydroxyl (silanol) groups, and strained bonds/localized states due to glassy disorder. The main absorption bands induced by UV/VUV excimer lasers are due to oxygen vacancies and due to silicon and oxygen dangling bonds (E'-centers and non-bridging oxygen hole centers, respectively). The optimized glasses are achieved via an intricate balance between a good stoichiometry, use of network modifiers (F or OH) to reduce the number…

Ag and Au/DNQ-novolac nanocomposites patternable by ultraviolet lithography: a fast route to plasmonic sensor microfabrication

2010

In this work we report on a method to synthesize Ag–Au nanoparticles/polymer nanocomposite patterns by UV lithography. The photoresists are based on DNQ-novolac as the polymer matrix, and Ag(I) and Au(III) salts as the nanoparticle precursors. After UV lithography, silver and gold nanoparticles are in situ synthesized inside the polymer patterns during a post bake. The resulting structured nanocomposite shows a characteristic absorbance spectrum related to the plasmon frequency of the synthesized noble metal NPs. This method represents a fast, simple and low-cost approach to the formation of extended polymer patterns with embedded silver or gold NPs. Moreover, it is a mechanism to position …
