First observations of the fumarolic gas output from a restless caldera: Implications for the current period of unrest (2005-2013) at Campi Flegrei

2013

The fumarolic gas output has not been quantified for any of the currently deforming calderas worldwide, due to the lack of suitable gas flux sensing techniques. In view of resumption of ground uplift (since 2005) and the associated variations in gas chemistry, Campi Flegrei, in southern Italy, is one of the restless calderas where gas flux observations are especially necessary. Here we report the first ever obtained estimate of the Campi Flegrei fumarolic gas output, based on a set of MultiGAS surveys (performed in 2012 and 2013) with an ad-hoc-designed measurement setup. We estimate that the current Campi Flegrei fumarolic sulphur (S) flux is low, on the order of 1.5–2.2 tons/day, suggesti…

Dynamic optimization of a continuous Lactide ring-opening polymerization process

2019

An increasing attention has been paid to the production of the polylactic acid (PLA) in recent years, owing to its properties as a biodegradable thermoplastic besides the fact that it is derived from renewable resources. PLA is industrially produced by ring opening polymerization of lactide. This reaction is sensitive to deviations in the operating conditions that highly affect the reaction rate and the polymer properties. Therefore, a process monitoring and control policy is crucial in order to restore the nominal conditions in case of drift. In this paper, a continuous PLA process is considered with three cascade reactors, two tubular and one loop reactor, that is described by partial dif…

Interaction of construction costs and output in Latvia

2020

Growth of an economy is strongly linked with the growth of the construction sector. An increased construction output must influence the costs in this area. Analysis of the construction output and construction costs in Latvia for the time period since 2006 until 2017 shows an average effect. The main goal is to forecast construction costs and output in Latvia. Comparative analysis of costs and output dynamics was done, and a general trend can be proven, but heteroscedasticity is being observed. The effect of construction output on costs is limited in scale, but similar in general tendency and author offers his discussion for possible reasons for inconsistencies in construction sector changes.

The fumarolic CO2 output from Pico do Fogo volcano (Cape Verde)

2020

The Pico do Fogo volcano, in the Cape Verde Archipelago off the western coasts of Africa, has been the most active volcano in the Macaronesia region in the Central Atlantic, with at least 27 eruptions during the last 500 years. Between eruptions fumarolic activity has been persisting in its summit crater, but limited information exists for the chemistry and output of these gas emissions. Here, we use the results acquired during a field survey in February 2019 to quantify the quiescent summit fumaroles' volatile output for the first time. By combining measurements of the fumarole compositions (using both a portable Multi-GAS and direct sampling of the hottest fumarole) and of the SO2 flux (u…

Feedback Linearizing Control of Induction Motor Considering Magnetic Saturation Effects

2015

This paper presents an input-output feedback linearization (FL) control technique for rotating induction motors, which takes into consideration the magnetic saturation of the iron core. Starting from a new formulation of the dynamic model taking into consideration the magnetic saturation expressed in a space-state form in the rotor-flux-oriented reference frame, the corresponding FL technique has been developed. To this aim, a particular care has been given to the choice of nonlinear functions interpolating the magnetic parameters versus the rotor magnetizing current and the corresponding magnetic characteristic. The proposed FL technique has been tested experimentally on a suitably develop…

Failure of the normalization of the RAS method : absorption and fabrication effects are still incorrect

2000

The r and s vectors of the RAS method of updating matrices are presented often as corresponding to an absorption effect and a fabrication effect. Here, it is proved that these vectors are not identified, so their interpretation in terms of fabrication and absorption effect is incorrect and even if a normalization was proposed to remove underidentification, this normalization fails and poses many difficulties.. Identifying a supply-chain related to the use of renewable natural resource: Case studies from France and Aquitaine region

2015

This paper aims to build a method to identify an economic sector. This type of method attempts to identify a pool of sub sector showing a strong intensity of economic flows between them. In this study, we show the potential of input output models for this type of analysis. Two types of contributions have been done here. First we improve the sub sector selection. Then we improve the calculation of the « economic distance between sub sectors belonging to the same sector. These improvements are applied to identified the wood sector in France but also at the regional level of Aquitaine. The empirical results show the features of sectors can vary between France and regions, mainly because of reg…

The type and the frequency of output-based activities in Finnish upper secondary school EFL textbooks : an overview of modern textbooks

2014

The study analyzes Finnish upper secondary school engslish as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks. It aims to create an overview of the type and the frequency of output-based activities in two different textbook series. The analysis examines textbooks from two different courses. The purpose of the study is to find out if there are gaps in the textbooks' activity repertoire so that teachers can complement them if they consider it necessary. No studies could be found that would provide an aspect to contribute to the present study. The data that consists of the units of activity in the textbooks is analyzed and categorized according to the method of theory guided content analysis. The activitie…

Output Impedance Improvement Using Coupled Inductors

2017

When using a single DC/DC converter with multiple outputs and having a buck topology, which has one filter inductor per output, the designer can choose to couple these outputs together. This paper demonstrates additional benefits of coupling output inductors together. Apart from saving mass and volume, and due to an improved small signal behaviour it also reduces the output impedance of the regulated output. The paper will analyse a seven output push-pull converter used as a space power converter module and verify the theoretical results with experimental measurements.

Impaired glutamatergic neurotransmission in migraine with aura? Evidence by an input-output curves transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

2011

Objective: An imbalance between activity of inhibitory and facilitatory intracortical circuits could play a central role in migraine etiology. We used input-output curves to achieve further information about intracortical excitability of motor cortex in migraine with aura. METHODS: Input-output curves were measured in the right abductor pollicis brevis muscle at rest in 12 patients suffering from migraine with aura and 8 healthy subjects. Stimuli were delivered at intensity ranging from 100% to 160% of resting motor threshold with 10-second inter-stimulus intervals. Seven patients were studied before and during treatment with levetiracetam. RESULTS: Results showed a greater motor-evoked pot…
