Polydispersity Effects on Interpenetration in Compressed Brushes
2019
We study the effect of polydispersity on the compression and interpenetration properties of two opposing polymer brushes by numerical self-consistent field approach and by analytical theory. Polydispersity is represented by an experimentally relevant Schulz–Zimm chain-length distribution. We focus on three different polydispersities representing sharp, moderate, and extremely wide chain length distributions and derive approximate analytical expressions for the pressure–separation curves, Π(D). We study the brush interpenetration and quantify it in terms of the overlap integral, Γ, representing the number of interbrush contacts, and interpenetration length, δ. For the case of moderate densit…
Burden of Comorbidities in Patients with OSAS and COPD-OSAS Overlap Syndrome
2021
Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are usually associated with multi-morbidity. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate the prevalence of comorbidities in a cohort of patients with OSAS and COPD-OSAS overlap syndrome (OS) patients and to explore differences between these two groups. Materials and Methods: Included were consecutive OS patients and OSAS patients who had been referred to our sleep laboratory, and were matched in terms of sex, age, BMI, and smoking history. Presence of comorbidities was recorded based on their medical history and after clinical and laboratory examination. Results: …
BaCoO3 monoclinic structure and chemical bonding analysis: hybrid DFT calculations
2021
Cobalt based perovskites have great potential for numerous applications. Contrary to a generally assumed hexagonal space group (SG P63/mmc) model as the ground state of BaCoO3 (BCO), our hybrid DFT calculations with B1WC density functional and the symmetry group–subgroup derived crystal structure model support the ground state of BCO to be indeed monoclinic, in agreement with recent experimental predictions [Chin et al., Phys. Rev. B, 2019, 100, 205139]. We found for the monoclinic BCO that the C-type anti-ferromagnetic low-spin (AFM LS) state (SG P2/c) is energetically only slightly more preferential at 0 K than the ferromagnetic (FM) LS state (SG C2/c). In turn, these monoclinic structure…
Cladding-Pumped Er/Yb-Co-Doped Fiber Amplifier for Multi-Channel Operation
2022
The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, as a Center of Excellence, has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017-TeamingPhase2 under grant agreement No. 739508, project CAMART2. We express our gratitude to rer. nat. Nicoletta Haarlammert from Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF for the refractive index measurements of ytterbium/erbium-co-doped fibers. This work is supported by the European Regional Development Fund project No. 1.1.1.1/18/A/068.
Activity overlap between mesocarnivores and prey in the Central Mongolian steppe
2021
Research on the ecology and behaviour of mesocarnivores and their prey is scant in Mongolia. We investigated activity patterns of a guild of mesocarnivores (red fox, Pallas's cat and beech marten) and their prey (Siberian marmot, Daurian pika, Brandt vole, Mongolian gerbil and Mongolian silver vole) using 21 camera traps (effort = 1155 camera days) in Central Mongolia from 25st of May to 20th August 2019. Activity patterns of mesocarnivores were cathemeral (i.e. no difference between diurnal, nocturnal and crepuscular detections, although activity peaked at sunrise). Among prey, the Siberian marmot and the Daurian pika were diurnal, whereas the Mongolian gerbil and the Mongolian silver vole…

Prematurity and overlap between reading and arithmetic: The cognitive mechanisms behind the association
2019
It is well-known that very preterm children perform at lower levels than full-term children in reading and arithmetic at school. Whether the lower performance levels of preterm children in these two separate domains have the same or different origins, however, is not clear. The present study examined the extent to which prematurity is associated with the overlap (i.e., common variance) of reading and arithmetic among Finnish school beginners. We also examined the extent to which the association of prematurity with the overlap between reading and arithmetic is due to different prereading skills, basic number skills, and general cognitive abilities. The participants (age 6-7) consisted of 193…
Pharmacotherapy of COPD in Central and Eastern Europe - The POPE study
2016
Introduction: In Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) the burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is high. It remains unknown whether patients are treated in line with GOLD recommendations or according to their phenotypes. Our aim was to analyze the treatment patterns of COPD in CEE. Methods: In the frame of the POPE study (ClinicalTrials.gov - NCT02119494) data including pharmacotherapy were collected in patients with stable COPD across 11 CEE countries. Results: 3366 patients (66±9 yrs, 70% male, FEV 1 53±18%) participated in the study. In all GOLD categories, the most widely used medications were long-acting beta-2 agonists (LABA), followed by long-acting antimuscarinic agents…
OSACO: an observational study in asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS)
2017
Background: ACOS describes the co-occurrence of asthma and COPD, although its prevalence and clinical features remain poorly characterized. Aims: To better understand the prevalence and characteristics of ACOS. Methods: An observational study is being performed in subjects with bronchial obstruction at 3 Italian centers. In the first phase, consecutive patients ≥40 years with documented bronchial obstruction are being recruited; eligible patients will enter the second phase, consisting of imaging, functional and clinical evaluation with the MRC dyspnea scale, St. George9s respiratory questionnaire index, Charlson index, and skin prick test. Main inclusion criteria for the evaluation phase a…
Autoimmune hepatitis and overlap syndromes
2002
Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an immune-mediated, autodestructive liver disease with hepatocytes as target cells, mostly affecting young women. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is also regarded as an autoimmune liver disease with bile duct epithelia as the target cells, resulting in a continuous loss of bile ducts. Both diseases may occur simultaneously in their full manifestations in about 10% to 20% of cases, thus constituting an overlap syndrome with PBC directing the course of the disease. AIH may also occur simultaneously with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), with a frequency of between 2% and 8% of patients with PSC. In most cases, AIH precedes manifestation of PSC. In children, t…
