Berenjenol ( 1), isolated from OXANDRA cf. XYLOPIOIDES (Annonaceae), was tested on two different experimental models of inflammation. The compound showed anti-inflammatory activity in the test of acute mouse ear edema induced by TPA (54 % inhibition, 1 μmol/ear) as well as in the test of subchronic inflammation induced by repeated application of TPA (57 % inhibition, 7 × 1 μmol/ear). Moreover, while it reduced the expression of both COX-2 (65 % inhibition at 50 μM) and iNOS (80 % inhibition at 50 μM), it was not active against TNF- α and IL-1 β in murine macrophages (RAW 264.7) stimulated with LPS. The nitration of tyrosine caused by peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species is clearly detrimental for some physiological processes; however, its signalling role is still open to controversy. Among the natural phenolics known for their ability to oppose free tyrosine nitration, isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside is investigated due to its unusual structure, which contains a simple hydroxybenzene alkylated by a hemiterpenoid moiety. Ficolin-1 (M), ficolin-2 (L), ficolin-3 (H) and mannan-binding lectin (MBL) activate the complement system and have opsonic activity. The specificity of ficolin-3 is poorly characterized and currently limited to a few ligands only. We present new specific targets for human ficolin-3, identified among lipopolysaccharides (LPSs, endotoxin) of Hafnia alvei. Plant phenolic antioxidants, among them catechins and hydroxycinnamoyl conjugates, constitute a well defined class of inhibitors of reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To gain deeper insight in this field, we examined the effects of 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (DCA), its methyl ester (DCE) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in nitrative and oxidative processes. After in vivo treatment of mice with thioglycollate medium, the amount of native factor B which could be detected in vitro in culture supernatants of peritoneal macrophages was much lower than that found in supernatants of macrophages taken from untreated mice. Abstract N-Glycoproteins fucosylated in the core region occur in tumor membranes and virus envelopes. Partial structures of such N-glycoproteins containing fucosylated chitobiosyl asparagine conjugates were synthesized using the allyloxycarbonyl (Aloc) and the tert-butyl ester protecting groups in the peptide portion. As the α-fucosidic bond of the conjugates revealed to be very sensitive to acids when carrying ether-type protecting groups, a method for exchanging the protecting groups of the fucose portion of saccharides was developed. Wild ungulates that forage on arable fields are exposed to the negative effects of pesticides, and this problem also applies to protected species for which intoxication by pesticides may pose a health risk and directly affect the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are widely used as predictors of whole-genome inbreeding levels in cattle. They identify regions that have an unfavorable effect on a phenotype when homozygous, but also identify the genes associated with traits of economic interest present in these regions. Here, the distribution of ROH islands and enriched genes within these regions in four dairy cattle breeds were investigated.
