Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration
2019
This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. In addition, various dimensions of moral intensity were obs…

Olley–Pakes productivity decomposition: computation and inference
2016
Summary We show how a moment-based estimation procedure can be used to compute point estimates and standard errors for the two components of the widely used Olley–Pakes decomposition of aggregate (weighted average) productivity. When applied to business level microdata, the procedure allows for autocovariance and heteroscedasticity robust inference and hypothesis testing about, for example, the coevolution of the productivity components in different groups of firms. We provide an application to Finnish firm level data and find that formal statistical inference casts doubt on the conclusions that one might draw on the basis of a visual inspection of the components of the decomposition.
Efficient spatial designs using Hausdorff distances and Bayesian optimization
2021
An iterative Bayesian optimisation technique is presented to find spatial designs of data that carry much information. We use the decision theoretic notion of value of information as the design criterion. Gaussian process surrogate models enable fast calculations of expected improvement for a large number of designs, while the full-scale value of information evaluations are only done for the most promising designs. The Hausdorff distance is used to model the similarity between designs in the surrogate Gaussian process covariance representation, and this allows the suggested algorithm to learn across different designs. We study properties of the Bayesian optimisation design algorithm in a sy…

Euroopan talouskriisi, koettu hyvinvointi ja sosiaalinen pääoma
2015
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan ihmisten kokemassa hyvinvoinnissa tapahtuneita muutoksia Euroopan talouskriisin aikana.
2016
Jurvanen, Sirja. 2015. Media merkitysten välittäjänä – Lasten tulkintoja Risto Räp-pääjä –elokuvien naisista. Kasvatustieteen pro gradu -tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Opettajankoulutuslaitos. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tutkia Risto Räppääjä -elokuvien lapsille välittämää naiskuvaa lasten tulkintojen kautta. Tutkielman aluksi käsittelen mediaa kasvuympäristönä sosiokulttuurisen tausta-ajattelun kautta. Sosiokulttuurisessa näkökulmassa oppiminen nähdään kokonaisvaltaisena prosessina, jossa ympäristöllä, kuten medialla on vaikutusta ihmiseen ja ihmisellä ympäristöön. Media vaikuttaa moneen seikkaan, kuten käyttäytymiseen, tunteisiin ja identiteettiin. Käsittelen lisäksi lasten aktiivi…
Typology of think tanks: A comparative study in Finland and Scotland
2021
This paper provides a comparative analysis of current Finnish and Scottish think tanks and reviews how think tanks in these countries have evolved, how think tanks seek to influence decision making and engage with their stakeholders. To address the ways of influence this paper looks how Finnish and Scottish think tanks describe themselves and how they use publications in their advocacy. Conducted content analysis indicates that usually registered association based Finnish think tanks are generally more research-focused organisations, who overall deploy more research publications for advocacy than the company based Scottish think tanks. Findings also reveal that the number of think tanks in …
Communication Professionals and Organisational Decision-Making: A Finnish Study of Practitioner Roles
2016
Traditionally, the debate on communication value and the contribution of communication professionals to organisational decision-making has been linked to diverging roles (managers, technicians). This chapter introduces an alternative view, based on an exploratory, qualitative study of communication professionals in Finland. It focuses on the diverse ways in which these professionals contribute to organisational decisionmaking. The results show a rich, constantly developing picture of communication practices, which challenges the traditional dichotomy of manager and technician roles. peerReviewed
