Reputation and financial reporting in Finnish public organizations
2021
PurposeThis article analyzes the links between financial reports and reputation in the context of Finnish public sector organizations. In general, the paper discusses the accounting treatment of intangible and tangible assets and the quality and relevance of public sector financial reporting.Design/methodology/approachFor data, we combine three data sets: financial statement information of eight anonymous Finnish public organizations, the results of a reputation survey among their key stakeholders (N = 914) and a sample of the social media sentiment around the organizations.FindingsOur findings suggest that a decrease in spending and, surprisingly in the nonprofit sector, an increase in the…
Sosiaaliset kontaktit ja epämuodollinen tieto rekrytoinnissa : tapaustutkimus rakennusalan pk-yrityksistä
2022
Artikkelin tutkimuskohteena on sosiaalisten kontaktien hyödyntäminen rekrytoinnissa. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaiset työnantajien harjoittamat käytännön toimet liittyvät menestyksekkääseen sosiaalisten kontaktien hyödyntämiseen rekrytoinnissa. Teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä rekrytointiprosessi jaettiin työnhakijoiden keräämisvaiheeseen, seulontavaiheeseen ja työntekijän valintavaiheeseen. Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin kahtatoista rakennusalan pk-yrityksen rekrytoinnista vastaavaa henkilöä. Teemahaastatteluaineisto analysoitiin käyttäen teoriaohjaavaa sisällönanalyysiä. Artikkelissa kuvataan, miten työnantajat hyödyntävät sosiaalisia kontakteja rekrytoinnin eri vaiheissa ja mitkä käytännö…
Coordinating action in technology-supported shared tasks: Virtual pointing as a situated practice for mobilizing a response
2021
Drawing on recordings of remote screen-based work meetings in Finland, this conversation analytic study investigates interactive properties of mouse cursor movements in technology-mediated shared tasks. The article illustrates how participants rely on features afforded by the input device in ways that divert from its pre-designed functions to accomplish virtual pointing gestures. These gestures serve as an organizational resource in the precursory phase of action, i.e. when a next on-screen action is observably made relevant. In this sequential environment, pointing by means of the tool is a collaborative resource: an embodied practice for sustaining co-orientation and advancing the sequent…

The role of social work in disaster management in Finland
2017
This study explores the role of social work in disaster management in Finland and its relation to international disaster social work discussions. The aim is to obtain information on the role of social work in disasters in Finland and to conceptualize disaster social work to understand it better. The framework of disaster social work interventions and the concepts of vulnerability, resilience and social capital are used in analyzing and conceptualizing the role. The methods used are integrative literature review, quantitative document analysis, and statistical analysis of the survey. Municipal social services’ preparedness plan documents and survey data of private social care units’ prepared…
Industry 4.0 vs. Industry 5.0 : Co-existence, Transition, or a Hybrid
2023
Smart manufacturing is being shaped nowadays by two different paradigms: Industry 4.0 proclaims transition to digitalization and automation of processes while emerging Industry 5.0 emphasizes human centricity. This turn can be explained by unprecedented challenges being faced recently by societies, such as, global climate change, pandemics, hybrid and conventional warfare, refugee crises. Sustainable and resilient processes require humans to get back into the loop of organizational decision-making. In this paper, we argue that the most reasonable way to marry the two extremes of automation and value-based human-driven processes is to create an Industry 4.0 + Industry 5.0 hybrid, which inher…

Why Use Interactive Multi-Objective Optimization in Chemical Process Design?
2008
Problems in chemical engineering, like most real-world optimization problems, typically, have several conflicting performance criteria or objectives and they often are computationally demanding, which sets special requirements on the optimization methods used. In this chapter, we point out some shortcomings of some widely used basic methods of multi-objective optimization. As an alternative, we suggest using interactive approaches where the role of a decision maker or a designer is emphasized. Interactive multi-objective optimization has been shown to suit well for chemical process design problems because it takes the preferences of the decision maker into account in an iterative manner tha…
Tensions and Paradoxes of Scaling Up : A Critical Reflection on Physical Activity Promotion
2022
Background: Achieving system-level, sustainable ‘scale-up’ of interventions is the epitome of successful translation of evidence-based approaches in population health. In physical activity promotion, few evidence-based interventions reach implementation at scale or become embedded within systems for sustainable health impact. This is despite the vast published literature describing efficacy studies of small-scale physical activity interventions. Research into physical activity scale-up (through case-study analysis; evaluations of scale-up processes in implementation trials; and mapping the processes, strategies, and principles for scale-up) has identified barriers and facilitato…
