Chiral approach to antikaon s- and p-wave interactions in dense nuclear matter

2006

The properties of the antikaons in nuclear matter are investigated from a chiral unitary approach which incorporates the s- and p-waves of the ${\bar K}N$ interaction. To obtain the in-medium meson-baryon amplitudes we include, in a self-consistent way, Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies corrected by nuclear short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We pay special attention to investigating the validity of the on-shell factorization, showing that it cannot be applied in the evaluation of the in-medium corrections to the p-wave amplitudes. In nuclear matter at saturation energy, the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ develop an attractive potential of about -30 MeV, while the $\Si…

Alkali-activated mortars for sustainable construction material: effects of binder-to-aggregate ratio and curing conditions

2019

Valorisation and reuse of industrial wastes has become a worldwide compelling topic to improve the sustainability of processes and materials. This paper discusses an alternative way to recycle the biomass fly ash, generated by the kraft pulp industry, to manufacture novel geopolymeric mortars intended for applications in construction. Biomass fly ash was used as a raw material, in partial substitution of the commonly used metakaolin, natural siliceous sand as aggregate. The followed manufacture process is highly simple and reproducible. Various proportions binder to aggregate were tested to study the effect on the final mortars properties. The mortars mechanical resistance was also studied …

Efficient simulation of the random-cluster model

2013

The simulation of spin models close to critical points of continuous phase transitions is heavily impeded by the occurrence of critical slowing down. A number of cluster algorithms, usually based on the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation of the Potts model, and suitable generalizations for continuous-spin models have been used to increase simulation efficiency. The first algorithm making use of this representation, suggested by Sweeny in 1983, has not found widespread adoption due to problems in its implementation. However, it has been recently shown that it is indeed more efficient in reducing critical slowing down than the more well-known algorithm due to Swendsen and Wang. Here, we present…

Coordination polymers based on bridging cyanocarbanions and bis-tridentate p-phenylenediamine ligands

2017

Two new Cu(II) coordination polymeric neutral chains of formula [Cu 2 (1,4-tpbd)(μ-A) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](A) 2 with A = tcnoet − ( 1 ) and tcnopr − ( 2 ) (1,4-tpbd =  N,N,N′N′ -tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)benzene-1,4-diamine, tcnoet −  = 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-ethoxypropenide and tcnopr −  = 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-propoxypropenide) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. 1  and  2 show alternating chains where the 1,4-tpbd and the cyanocarbanion units (tcnoet − for 1 and tcnopr − for 2 ) alternate as bridging ligands. The molecular structure can be viewed as [Cu 2 (μ-tpbd)] 4+ dinuclear units (with Cu⋯Cu distances of 8.2233(3) for 1 …

Microlensing constraints on axion stars including finite lens and source size effects

2021

A fraction of light scalar dark matter, especially axions, may organize into Bose-Einstein condensates, gravitationally bound clumps, "boson stars", and be present in large number in galactic halos today. We compute the expected number of gravitational microlensing events of clumps composed of the ordinary QCD axion and axion-like-particles and derive microlensing constraints from the EROS-2 survey and the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam observation. We perform a detailed lensing calculation, including the finite lens and source size effects in our analysis. We constrain the axion mass in terms of the fraction of dark matter collapsed into clumps, the individual clump densities, and the axion self…

Can QCD Axion Stars explain Subaru HSC microlensing?

2021

A non-negligible fraction of the QCD axion dark matter may form gravitationally bound Bose Einstein condensates, which are commonly known as axion stars or axion clumps. Such astrophysical objects have been recently proposed as the cause for the single candidate event reported by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) microlensing search in the Andromeda galaxy. Depending on the breaking scale of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and the details of the dark matter scenario, QCD axion clumps may form via gravitational condensation during radiation domination, in the dense core of axion miniclusters, or within axion minihalos around primordial black holes. We analyze all these scenarios and conclude that the…

Radio data and synchrotron emission in consistent cosmic ray models

2011

It is well established that phenomenological two-zone diffusion models of the galactic halo can very well reproduce cosmic-ray nuclear data and the observed antiproton flux. Here, we consider lepton propagation in such models and compute the expected galactic population of electrons, as well as the diffuse synchrotron emission that results from their interaction with galactic magnetic fields. We find models in agreement not only with cosmic ray data but also with radio surveys at essentially all frequencies. Requiring such a globally consistent description strongly disfavors very large ($L\gtrsim 15$ kpc) and, even stronger, small ($L\lesssim 1$ kpc) effective diffusive halo sizes. This has…

Stochastic fluctuations of bosonic dark matter

2021

Numerous theories extending beyond the standard model of particle physics predict the existence of bosons that could constitute the dark matter (DM) permeating the universe. In the standard halo model (SHM) of galactic dark matter the velocity distribution of the bosonic DM field defines a characteristic coherence time $\tau_c$. Until recently, laboratory experiments searching for bosonic DM fields have been in the regime where the measurement time $T$ significantly exceeds $\tau_c$, so null results have been interpreted as constraints on the coupling of bosonic DM to standard model particles with a bosonic DM field amplitude $\Phi_0$ fixed by the average local DM density. However, motivate…

Relaxion Stars and their detection via Atomic Physics

2019

The cosmological relaxion can address the hierarchy problem, while its coherent oscillations can constitute dark matter in the present universe. We consider the possibility that the relaxion forms gravitationally bound objects that we denote as relaxion stars. The density of these stars would be higher than that of the local dark matter density, resulting in enhanced signals in table-top detectors, among others. Furthermore, we raise the possibility that these objects may be trapped by an external gravitational potential, such as that of the Earth or the Sun. This leads to formation of relaxion halos of even greater density. We discuss several interesting implications of relaxion halos, as …
