Extramammary Paget Disease of the Axilla Associated With Comedo-like Apocrine Carcinoma In Situ.
2002
Extramammary Paget disease of the axilla with underlying apocrine carcinoma has been reported only in six cases until now. This report deals with a seventh case characterized by the unique finding of comedo-like features evocative of large cell ductal breast carcinoma within an otherwise typical in situ apocrine carcinoma. This is characterized by spiral-shaped foci of epithelial proliferation with decapitation secretion and central masses of necrotic debris. A possible connection between the solid neoplasm and the overlying Paget disease is illustrated by a few apocrine-follicular units colonized by both the Paget cells and the structured adenocarcinoma. Here, although they display the sam…
Provision of tailored health information for patient empowerment: An initial study
2019
Search of "right" health information by patients/citizens is an important step towards their empowerment. The number of health information seekers on the Internet is steadily increasing over the years so it is crucial to understand their information needs and the challenges they face during the search process. However, generic search engines do not make any distinction among the users and overload them with the amount of information. Moreover, specific search engines/sites mostly work on medical literature and are built by hand. This paper analyses the possibility of providing the user with tailored web information by exploiting the web semantic capabilities and, in particular, those of sch…

The therapeutic potential of interleukin-6 hyperagonists and antagonists.
1997
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a 4-helical protein that binds to a specific IL-6 receptor on target cells and to two molecules of the promiscuous signal transducing protein, glycoprotein 130 (gp130). Structure-function analysis has led to the definition of molecular contacts between IL-6 and its receptor subunits. This knowledge has led to the design of competitive antagonistic proteins that retain their receptor binding capability, but fail to stimulate one or both gp130 proteins; the properties of such recombinant antagonistic proteins are compared with traditional neutralising monoclonal antibodies targeted at IL-6 or receptor subunits. Furthermore, several strategies have been employed to cons…
BLM scale for the pion transition form factor
2001
The NLO Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale for the pion transition form factor has been determined. To achieve that, a consistent calculation up to nf-proportional NNLO contributions to both the hard-scattering amplitude and the perturbatively calculable part of the pion distribution amplitude has been performed. By combining and matching the results obtained for these two amplitudes, a proper cancellation of collinear singularities has been established and the gamma5 ambiguity problem (related to the use of the dimensional regularization method) has been resolved by using the naive-gamma5 as well as the 't Hooft-Veltman (HV) schemes. It has been demonstrated that the prediction for the p…
Superconductivity in one dimension
2008
Superconducting properties of metallic nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors because of the dominating role played by thermal and quantum fluctuations of the order parameter. For superconducting wires with diameters below $ \sim 50$ nm quantum phase slippage is an important process which can yield a non-vanishing wire resistance down to very low temperatures. Further decrease of the wire diameter, for typical material parameters down to $\sim 10$ nm, results in proliferation of quantum phase slips causing a sharp crossover from superconducting to normal behavior even at T=0. A number of interesting phenomena associated both with quantum phase slips and with …

We have determined by forced Rayleigh scattering the diffusion coefficients of photo-labeled polystyrene micronetwork spheres (radii ≤ 10 nm) in melts of linear polyvinylmethylether (M W ≤ 40000 g/mol) at temperatures of 20-80°C. An expected slippage of the spheres through the meshes of the entanglement network appears possible but is still within the experimental uncertainty of our results.
Training young adults with intellectual disability to read critically on the internet.
2019
Background Young people with intellectual disability (ID) are becoming frequent Internet users, but they present difficulties selecting reliable Internet sources. Methods The present authors tested an instructional programme aimed at increasing skills to evaluate information from the Internet of 33 young adult students with intellectual disability enrolled in special needs education (19.4 years). The programme was composed of different web pages that provided conflicting views on a controversial topic. Students participated in small group discussions supported with Wh-question graphic organizers and contrasting cases during seven sessions. Results Differences between pre- and post-tests ind…
Proteomic analysis of exosome-like vesicles derived from breast cancer cells.
2012
Background/Aim: The phenomenon of membrane vesicle-release by neoplastic cells is a growing field of interest in cancer research, due to their potential role in carrying a large array of tumor antigens when secreted into the extracellular medium. In particular, experimental evidence show that at least some of the tumor markers detected in the blood circulation of mammary carcinoma patients are carried by membrane-bound vesicles. Thus, biomarker research in breast cancer can gain great benefits from vesicle characterization. Materials and Methods: Conditioned medium was collected from serum starved MDA-MB-231 sub-confluent cell cultures and exosome-like vesicles (ELVs) were isolated by ultra…
