Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference as Predictors of Disability in Nonagenarians : The Vitality 90+ Study
2017
Background Only scarce data exist on the association between obesity and disability in the oldest old. The purpose of this prospective study is to examine if body mass index and waist circumference (WC) are associated with incident mobility and activities of daily living (ADL) disability in nonagenarians. Methods We used longitudinal data from the Vitality 90+ Study, which is a population-based study conducted at the area of Tampere, Finland. Altogether 291 women and 134 men, aged 90–91 years, had measured data on body mass index and/or WC and did not have self-reported mobility or ADL disability at baseline. Incident mobility and ADL disability was followed-up on median 3.6 years (range 0.…
Associations of cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and BMI with arterial health in middle‐aged men and women
2020
We investigated the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical activity (PA) with regard to aerobic and resistance training, and body mass index (BMI) with pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) in middle‐aged adults with at least one cardiovascular risk factor. A total of 84 (46 men and 38 women) participated in the study. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a maximal graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer and was defined as maximal power output (Wmax) normalized for body weight‐0.35. Participation in aerobic and resistance training was assessed by a detailed questionnaire and BMI was calculated as weight (kg)/[height (m2)]. Pulse wave velocity an…
The Effectiveness of Physical Activity-Promoting Web- and Mobile-Based Distance Weight Loss Interventions on Body Composition in Rehabilitation Setti…
2022
Background: Overweight and obesity are major problems worldwide, and they lead to an increased risk for several diseases. The use of technology in the treatment of obesity is promising, but in the existing literature, there is considerable uncertainty regarding its efficacy. In this review, we included web- and mobile-based weight loss interventions that were implemented remotely in rehabilitation settings. Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to study the effectiveness of physical activity-promoting web- and mobile-based distance weight loss interventions in rehabilitation settings on body composition in comparison with control groups that did not use technology. Methods: Studie…
Are computer and cell phone use associated with body mass index and overweight? A population study among twin adolescents
2007
Background. Overweight in children and adolescents has reached dimensions of a global epidemic during recent years. Simultaneously, information and communication technology use has rapidly increased. Methods. A population-based sample of Finnish twins born in 1983–1987 (N = 4098) was assessed by self-report questionnaires at 17 y during 2000–2005. The association of overweight (defined by Cole's BMI-for-age cut-offs) with computer and cell phone use and ownership was analyzed by logistic regression and their association with BMI by linear regression models. The effect of twinship was taken into account by correcting for clustered sampling of families. All models were adjusted for gender, ph…
Tyttöjen painonpudottaminen, painonhallintakeinot ja liikunta-aktiivisuus
2003
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, kuinka yleisesti 13- ja 15-vuotiaat suomalaistytöt ilmoittavat pudottavansa painoaan, millaisena he kokevat painonsa ja millaisia painonhallintakeinoja he ilmoittavat käyttävänsä.

2013
TIIVISTELMÄ Mitatun fyysisen kunnon sekä kehonkoostumuksen yhteys työperäiseen stressiin ylipainoisilla, liikuntaa harrastamattomilla henkilöillä Maaria Mäkitervo Jyväskylän yliopisto Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta Terveystieteiden laitos Syksy 2013 53 sivua, 9 liitettä Työperäinen stressi on eräs työelämän keskeisimmistä haasteista ja sillä on mittavat vaikutukset terveydenhuollon kustannuksiin. Stressillä tiedetään olevan kiistaton vaikutus sydämen sykevaihteluun ja liikunnan on todettu laukaisevan stressiä ja parantavan sykevaihtelua. Näin voidaan tarkastella yksilön aerobisen kunnon vaikutusta sykevaihtelun kautta työperäisen stressin ilmentymiseen ja kokemiseen. Tämän pro gradu -tutki…
Weight Reduction Behaviors Among European Adolescents : Changes From 2001/2002 to 2017/2018
2020
Purpose The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in the prevalence of weight reduction behaviors (WRBs) among European adolescents from 26 countries between 2001/2002 and 2017/2018. The impact of the perception of body weight on WLB was also analyzed, with particular attention being paid to overestimation. Methods The data of 639,194 European adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 years who participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey were analyzed. Age-standardized prevalence rates of WRB were estimated separately by survey round and gender for each country, using the overall 2017/2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study population as the standard.
