Motivators, barriers and strategies of weight management: A cross-sectional study among Finnish adults.

2018

Abstract Background Weight management (WM) is an ongoing global challenge. The purpose of this study was to analyze motivators, barriers, and strategies of WM among Finnish adults. Methods Data were collected in the ‘KULUMA’ (Consumers at the Weight Management Market) project among 667 community-dwelling adults in Eastern and Central Finland (Kuopio and Jyvaskyla). The self-reported questionnaire collected background information and responses to motivators, barriers, and strategy items. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract components of motivators, barriers, and strategies of WM, along with K-means clustering to categorize the participants. Results About 55% of the respond…

Changes in Physical Activity, Motor Performance, and Psychosocial Determinants of Active Behavior in Children : A Pilot School-Based Obesity Program

2020

The obesity epidemic and the decline of fitness among children highlights the need for suitable interventions designed to promote Physical Activity (PA) and healthy habits. The purpose of our pilot study was to assess the feasibility of a school-based program among overweight and obese children, by examining changes in their body composition, PA, physical fitness, and some psychosocial determinants of active behavior. An additional objective was to investigate the reciprocal relationship over time between PA and body image. Self-reported PA and health-related fitness tests were administered to 18 overweight and obese children (11.3 ± 0.4 years), before and after a 6-month intervention inclu…

Tarve laihduttaa : kyse ei ollutkaan pelkistä kiloista

2016

Jokinen, Emmi (2016). Tarve laihduttaa ― kyse ei ollutkaan pelkistä kiloista. Liikuntakasva- tuksen laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, liikuntapedagogiikan pro gradu –tutkielma, 56 sivua, 1 liite.

Sleep-time physiological recovery is associated with eating habits in distressed working-age Finns with overweight: secondary analysis of a randomise…

2021

Background Association of physiological recovery with nutrition has scarcely been studied. We investigated whether physiological recovery during sleep relates to eating habits, i.e., eating behaviour and diet quality. Methods Cross-sectional baseline analysis of psychologically distressed adults with overweight (N = 252) participating in a lifestyle intervention study in three Finnish cities. Recovery measures were based on sleep-time heart rate variability (HRV) measured for 3 consecutive nights. Measures derived from HRV were 1) RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences) indicating the parasympathetic activation of the autonomic nervous system and 2) Stress Balance (SB) indica…

The two intervention groups were instructed to follow identical weight-management program. One group received the program within a Facebook group, along with a support network with the group, and the other intervention group receive…

Theory-based digital intervention to promote weight loss and weight loss maintenance (Choosing Health)

2020

IntroductionDigital behavioural weight loss interventions have the potential to improve public health; however, these interventions are often not adequately tailored to the needs of the participants. This is the protocol for a trial that aims to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Choosing Health programme as a means to promote weight loss and weight loss maintenance among overweight/obese adults. Methods and analysisThe proposed study is a two-group randomised controlled trial with a nested interrupted time series (ITS) within-person design. Participants (n=285) will be randomly assigned to either the Choosing Health digital intervention or a control group. For interve…

A Smartphone App to Promote Healthy Weight Gain, Diet, and Physical Activity During Pregnancy (HealthyMoms): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Tri…

2019

BACKGROUND: Excessive gestational weight gain is common and associated with adverse outcomes both in the short and long term. Although traditional lifestyle-based interventions have shown to mitigate excess gestational weight gain, little is known about whether mobile Health (mHealth) apps can promote healthy weight gain, diet, and physical activity during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the HealthyMoms trial is to determine the effectiveness of a smartphone app (HealthyMoms) for mitigating excess gestational weight gain during pregnancy. Secondary aims are to determine the effectiveness of the app on dietary habits, physical activity, body fatness, and glycemia during pregnancy. M…

Hyvää elämää ja tietoista painonhallintaa : hyväksymis-ja omistautumisterapiaan pohjautuvan painonhallintaohjelman toimivuus ja hyväksyttävyys

2017

Energy expenditure and muscle activity in active and passive commute among elderly

2011

Since the amount of elderly people and people being overweight are increasing, there should be means to prevent people from getting weight and to ensure longer independency and ability in everyday living among elderly people to decrease the costs that are caused by these trends. Purpose of the study was to compare muscle activity and oxygen consumption in an active and passive commute to demonstrate the effectiveness of active way of living. Thigh muscle EMG activity and oxygen consumption (VO2) during different daily activities such as walking and stair negotiation in unloaded and loaded conditions were measured from 16 elderly individuals, but due to incomplete data nine subjects were inc…
