150 years of the discovery of the Cambrian Lagerstätte of Murero (Cadenas Ibéricas, NE Spain)
2013
Reconstruction of the internal structure of the pore system of a complex dinosaur eggshell (Megaloolithus siruguei)
2013
Despite the many reconstructions of fossil material that have recently appeared in the literature, dinosaur eggshells have never been reconstructed using computing techniques. Using the EMAC 3-D modelling methodology, we reconstruct a section of the Late Cretaceous Megaloolithus siruguei eggshell, which has a particularly complex pore system, exhibiting an intricate network of vertical, oblique, and horizontal pores.
Pseudolillia Maubeuge, 1949 (Ammonitida, Hildoceratidae) in the Lower Jurassic (Toarcian) of the NE Spain
2017
In the present paper, 147 specimens assigned to the genus Pseudolillia Maubeuge, 1949 are studied. This is a considerably high number of samples in comparison with those known in other geographical areas where they have been cited, such as northern France, the Pyrenees, the Betic Range, Morocco, Portugal, Italy, Hungary and Bulgaria. The six taxa described, P. murvillensis, P. hispanica, P. emiliana, P. donovani, Pseudolillia ? n. sp. (en García-Gómez & Rivas, 1980), and Pseudolillia ? sp., come from 22 sites in the Cantabrian and Iberian Ranges and the Isle of Majorca. Their presence in expanded sections enabled us to situate the stratigraphic position of the genus between the upper part o…
A Givetian and Early Frasnian conodont sequence from Renanué section is presented. As a result, 28 taxa belonging to Polygnathus, Icriodus, Skeletognathus and Klapperina are described. 21 taxa are described and illustrated for the first time from Renanué section. This conodont succession will allow a …
Names for trace fossils: a uniform approach.
2006
The taxonomic treatment of trace fossils needs a uniform approach, independent of the ethologic groups concerned. To this aim, trace fossils are rigorously defined with regard to biological taxa and physical sedimentary structures. Potential ichnotaxobases are evaluated, with morphology resulting as the most important criterion. For trace fossils related to bioerosion and herbivory, substrate plays a key role, as well as composition for coprolites. Size, producer, age, facies and preservation are rejected as ichnotaxobases. Separate names for undertracks and other poorly preserved material should gradually be replaced by ichnotaxa based on well-preserved specimens. Recent traces may be iden…
Análisis criptopaleontológico del lapidario de Teofrasto (s. III a.C.)
2013
The work “Perì líthon” or Teofrasto’s “Treatise of stones” has been considered the oldest text still available about minerals and rocks, even though it has remained incomplete. In this paper, the study of its contents shows that eleven of the stones called by geographic or cryptic names are either fossils from plants or vertebrates or chemical fossils. Therefore, the “Perì líthon” should also be considered as the oldest known treatise about palaeontology, because in addition to the fossils mentioned, it refers specifically to the fossilisation process.
Evolution and systematics of the late miocene spanish Giraffidae (Mammalia, Ruminantia, Pecora)
2017
Comprehensive database on Induan (Lower Triassic) to Sinemurian (Lower Jurassic) marine bivalve genera and their paleobiogeographic record
2014
Marine bivalve genera that were described or mentioned for Triassic and Lower Jurassic deposits worldwide are reviewed in terms of their validity, stratigraphic range, paleogeographic distribution, paleoautoecology and shell mineralogy. Data were originally compiled at species level and are arranged systematically. A brief discussion for each genus includes synonymy, taxonomic status and included subgenera, as well as current uncertainties about their validity and range. The distribution of each genus is also shown on paleogeographic maps. Type species and first and last appearances of each genus are also mentioned. We recognize as valid 280 genera and their included subgenera, and we furth…
Dinosaur bonebed amber from an original swamp forest soil
2021
AbstractDinosaur bonebeds with amber content, yet scarce, offer a superior wealth and quality of data on ancient terrestrial ecosystems. However, the preserved palaeodiversity and/or taphonomic characteristics of these exceptional localities had hitherto limited their palaeobiological potential. Here we describe the amber from the Lower Cretaceous dinosaur bonebed of Ariño (Teruel, Spain) using a multidisciplinary approach. Amber is found in both a root layer with amber strictly in situ and a litter layer namely composed of aerial pieces unusually rich in bioinclusions, encompassing 11 insect orders, arachnids, and a few plant and vertebrate remains, including a feather. Additional palaeont…
