Cognitive consequences of the timing of puberty

2018

In this paper, we use British cohort data to study the degree to which children at different stages of pubertal development at age 11 and 16 differ in their cognitive and behavioral outcomes at age 16 as well as in their completed educational attainment and adult earnings. Controlling for age 7 cognitive skills, region of birth, father's socioeconomic status and parents’ education, we show that boys’ late pubertal development is associated with lower levels of cognitive skills at 16, lower final educational attainment, and lower earnings in adulthood. For girls we find a similar negative relationship between late puberty and cognitive skills, but only imprecise relationships between the tim…

2018

The purpose of this study is to describe and compare upper-level sport managers’ career success, career success variables and the associations between them. The perspective of gender equality is used. Three indicators of objective and subjective career success are used: pay (objective), career success satisfaction, and the balance between work and family/private life (subjective). The specific variables are divided into five different categories: sociodemographic, human capital, social support, organisational, and sports specific. The data (n=329) for this quantitative cross- sectional study were collected by means of an internet questionnaire sent out to public and non-governmental sports …

Profit Sharing the Firm-Size Wage Premium

2017

This study analyzes the relationships among wages, firm size, and profit sharing schemes. We develop a simple theoretical model and explore the relationship empirically using high-quality panel data. The theoretical model shows that the firm-size wage premium decreases in the presence of profit sharing. The empirical results based on rich matched employee-employer data for private sector wage earners in Finland show that the firm-size wage premium is modest, and it becomes negligible when we account for profit sharing and covariates describing assortative matching and monopsony behavior. The analysis suggests that profit sharing schemes embody effects of firm-specific unobservables that rai…

What's it all worth? : a qualitative study on what motivates women in low-paying jobs in Finland

2017

The concept of work motivation has received increased attention in the management literature during the past decades, and the interest continues well into today’s management practices and related research. This should be the case, as motivated employees can be considered as the most valuable resources a company can have. Through exploratory research design, qualitative research strategy and qualitative thematic analysis of the data, this study aims to provide insights to what motivates women employed in low-paying jobs in Finland. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews of 14 women who are working in jobs considered as low-paying. From the data, three overarching th…

Ammattiryhmittäiset palkat, palkkahajonta ja teknologiamuutokset

2013

Corporate Executive Salaries – The Argument from Economic Efficiency

2008

The very high level and constant growth in salaries for corporate executives has been a trend causing debate for over a decade now. It has given rise to a range of arguments for and against high salary levels. The single most prevalent argument for high executive salaries has been the argument based on economic efficiency. In this argument, high salaries for corporate executives are justified as they form an incentive that motivates them to high performance. While striving to earn these incentives, executives achieve improvements to productivity in their firm, which benefits society. This paper considers the argument from economic efficiency from a philosophical viewpoint. Arguments for and…
