Value of Quantitative DNA Analysis in Endocrine Tumors of the Pancreas
1997
The diagnosis of malignancy can be difficult in endocrine tumors of the pancreas. Moreover prognostically relevant factors are not available. The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively whether the DNA distribution pattern can differentiate between benign and malignant pancreatic endocrine tumors and secondly whether the DNA content of tumor cells gives prognostic information.Image cytometry of paraffin-embedded tumor material of 42 pancreatic endocrine tumors. In 27 benign endocrine pancreatic tumors (25 insulinomas, 2 benign nonfunctioning endocrine tumors) we could differentiate between 6 diploid, 15 hypotriploid and 6 triploid DNA histograms. In 15 malignant endocrine tumors of…
MEN1 Disease Occurring Before 21 Years Old: A 160-Patient Cohort Study From the Groupe d'étude des Tumeurs Endocrines
2015
Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type-1 (MEN1) in young patients is only described by case reports. To improve the knowledge of MEN1 natural history before 21 years old.Obtain a description of the first symptoms occurring before 21 years old (clinical symptoms, biological or imaging abnormalities), surgical outcomes related to MEN1 Neuro Endocrine Tumors (NETs) occurring in a group of 160 patients extracted from the "Groupe d'étude des Tumeurs Endocrines" MEN1 cohort. The first symptoms were related to hyperparathyroidism in 122 cases (75%), pituitary adenoma in 55 cases (34%), nonsecreting pancreatic tumor (NSPT) in 14 cases (9%), insulinoma in 20 cases (12%), gastrinoma in three cases (2%), mal…
A Good Breath of Oxygen for Beta-Like Cells Obtained From Porcine Exocrine Pancreatic Tissue
2011
Ischemia is the most important factor that affects organ survival during harvesting. The two-layer method (TLM) is one of several cold storage solutions that seeks to preserve organs and cells avoiding in vivo and in vitro ischemia. We compared the retrieval of beta-like elements from exocrine pancreatic cells using TLM versus University of Wisconsin (UW) solutions. For this purpose pancreata laparoscopically harvested from 20 female pigs were preserved in UW solution or TLM before digestion. The resulting exocrine cells were divided into 2 groups: the first was cultured in a designed medium to allow differentiation into beta-like cells and the second was cryopreserved before the differenti…

Viral exanthema as manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection
2020
Abstract Rationale: The clinical manifestations of the SARS-CoV-2 infection are mainly respiratory but the virus can cause a variety of symptoms. Dermatological findings are less well-characterized. Data is scarce on their timing, type and correlation with the immune response. Patient concerns: We present the case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a previously healthy woman who presented with respiratory symptoms and developed anosmia, diarrhea, and an erythematous maculo-papular rash on day 15 from symptom onset. Diagnosis: The nasopharyngeal swab tested by real time PCR for COVID-19 was positive. We interpreted this as a viral exanthema likely caused by an immune response to SARS-CoV-2 nucleotid…
The pandemic within the pandemic: the surge of neuropsychological disorders in Italian children during the COVID-19 era
2022
Abstract Background Quarantine and isolation measures during COVID-19 pandemic may have caused additional stress and challenged the mental health of the youth. Aim of the study is to investigate the COVID-19 pandemic impact on neuropsychological disorders (NPD) of Italian children and adolescents to provide general pediatric recommendations. Material and methods A retrospective multicenter observational study was planned by the Italian Pediatric Society (SIP) to explore the impact of COVID-19 on the access of children to pediatric Emergency Departments (pED) for the evaluation of neuropsychological symptoms, collecting the classification codes of diagnoses between March 1, 2019 and March 2,…
The Use of Social Media in Children and Adolescents: Scoping Review on the Potential Risks.
2022
In recent years, social media has become part of our lives, even among children. From the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic period, media device and Internet access rapidly increased. Adolescents connected Internet alone, consulting social media, mostly Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. During “lockdown”, the Internet usage allowed communication with peers and the continuity activities such as school teaching. However, we have to keep in mind that media usage may be related to some adverse consequences especially in the most vulnerable people, such as the young. Aim of the review is to focus on risks correlated to social media use by children and adolescents, identifying spies of ris…
Maternal Competence, Maternal Burnout and Personality Traits in Italian Mothers after the First COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
This study aimed to investigate the maternal sense of competence and maternal burnout in Italian mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample was composed of 278 mothers of children/adolescents aged 4 to 17 years old. Participants were recruited after the end of the first spring total Italian lockdown (June–October 2020) through online advertisements on websites and social media. We hypothesized a model in which a specific personality trait, such as neuroticism, affected maternal competence by the mediating role of maternal burnout. Results showed that neuroticism was directly and negatively predictive of perception of maternal competence, and it was negatively associated with maternal …
