The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency and degree of elevated serum levels of Total Amylase (TA), Pancreatic Amylase (PA), and Lipase (L) activity in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on conservative therapy; CRF on periodical hemodialysis (HD); in renal transplant (RT) and in a control Group (C). Mean values were significantly higher in all groups than Group C for TA (p < 0.005), PA (p < 0.0001) and L (p < 0.0001). The evaluation of post-operative outcomes is necessary once we describe an innovative surgical approach. Methods: We have performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database on robotic pancreatic surgery including malignant and benign indications for surgery. A critical analysis of morbidity and mortality for pancreatico-duodenectomy was performed on 221 patients. During the 1960s and 1970s, the morbidity and mortality for pancreaticoduodenectomy were so high that many thought the operative procedure ought to be abandoned. During the 1980s, however, many centers reported mortality rates around 5% and a morbidity of 25% to 35%. Others still reported a mortality of more than 10% and a morbidity of up to 65%. The mitochondrial (mt) 3243 DNA mutation is an underlying cause of maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) syndrome and the syndrome of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). We report an affected German MIDD pedigree with maternal lineage over three generations. The index patient, her mother, her maternal aunt and her maternal grandmother all suffered from diabetes and premature hearing loss and were positive on testing for the mt 3243 DNA mutation. The aim of the study was to assess whether increased intra-abdominal pressure affects the clinical course and reflects on the effectiveness of the conservative treatment in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. We examined the expression of intercellular--adhesion molecule-I (ICAM-I, CD54) in 6 surgically removed pancreatic tumors and 8 pancreatic tumor cell lines. Immunohistochemistry revealed a varying percentage of ICAM-I-positive pancreas tumor cells, while normal pancreatic tissue (except for slight reactivity of endothelial cells) was not stained. The presence of the ICAM-I molecule on the cell surface and the expression of ICAM-I mRNA were investigated for 8 different pancreatic tumor cell lines.
