HLA association is different in children and adults with severe acquired aplastic anemia
2007
Background Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is defined as pancytopenia caused by bone marrow failure. The pathogenesis of SAA is thought to involve autoimmune processes. Increased susceptibility to autoimmunity has been shown to be associated with several different HLA alleles. In SAA, few large studies based on data mainly from adults describe a positive HLA correlation with HLA-DR2 (DRB1*15) and HLA-B14. Procedure This study explored the HLA constitution of 181 children with SAA who were enrolled in the prospective multi-center study SAA94 between January 1994 and January 2002. The control group consisted of 303 healthy individuals of comparable demographic background. Allelic frequencies bet…
Successful treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding with recombinant factor VIIa after kidney transplantation in patients with pancytopenia.
2006
Abstract Hemostatic disorders can often complicate transplantation procedures. Moreover, antihemmorhagic drugs may not efficiently control bleeding that occurs in such cases. We report on a patient who underwent kidney transplantation complicated by bone marrow aplasia and gastric bleeding who was succesfully treated with recombinant activated FVII (Novoseven). In May 2005, a 53-year-old man affected by chronic renal insufficiency underwent kidney transplantation. At the beginning of June, laboratory tests showed progressive reduction in the blood cell count with anemia, granulocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia related to the development of marrow insufficiency. We commenced transfusion thera…
Drug‐refractory myasthenia gravis: Clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcome

[Objective] To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients with refractory myasthenia gravis (MG) and to determine the effectiveness and side effects of the drugs used for their treatment.
Measles and Secondary Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis
2012
To the Editor: We found interesting the article by Lupo et al. about a case of fatal measles in an immunocompetent 29-year-old woman (Fatal measles without rash in immunocompetent adult, France; http://dx.doi.org/10.3201/eid1803.111300). Perhaps, however, the possible diagnosis of secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) should also have been considered in that setting. HLH is a potentially fatal hyperinflammatory syndrome characterized by histiocyte proliferation and hemophagocytosis. HLH may be inherited (i.e., primary, familial, generally occurring in infants) or may occur at any age secondary to infection, malignancy, or rheumatologic disease. Secondary HLH is determined accor…

Hemophagocytic syndrome in a patient with disseminated tuberculosis: a case report
2018
Hemophagocytic syndrome (HS) is a rare disorder of the immune system. It is characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia and hyperferritinemia. The cause differs in each country suggesting a specific genetic background and epidemiology of infections, and it can be associated with malignant diseases. A rare cause of HS is tuberculosis (TB), we describe a case of HS associated with disseminated Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) infection in a patient from Sudan. He presented diarrhea, fever, pancytopenia, thickened and dilated bowel loops and lymph nodes enlargement at ultrasound and computed tomography scan. A bone marrow biopsy performed to rule out a lymphoma reveal…
Data of safety in a single-center alemtuzumab treated population
2020
Alemtuzumab is approved for highly active MS and, in Europe, can be employed after other disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) as an escalation approach or first therapeutic option. The occurrence of secondary autoimmune adverse events and infections differs depending on the employed approach. In the manuscript entitled “Alemtuzumab treatment of multiple sclerosis in real-world clinical practice: report from a single Italian center” by di Ioia M. and collaborators, efficacy and safety data of alemtuzumab were evaluated in a real-world MS population. The aim of the article is to describe in detail the unexpected serious adverse events which occurred in this cohort during and after the administr…
