Investigating the role of environmental taxes and regulations for renewable energy consumption: evidence from developed economies
2021
The current study aims to explore the role of environmental taxes and regulations for the renewable energy consumption, focusing on reporting policy suggestions to overcome climate change issues and achieve environmental sustainability. The main objective of this paper is to examine the relation between renewable energy, environmental taxes, environmental technologies, and environmental regulations in 29 OECD countries during 1996–2018. More precisely, we inspect the impact of the environmental regulations and environmental technologies on the renewable energy consumption. The authors employ CIPS and CADF unit root tests, panel Westerlund co-integration test, FMOLS, and Quantile regression …
The Euro-Dollar Exchange Rate: Is it Fundamental?
2002
In this paper we have applied two approaches to the study of the dollar real exchange rate in relation with the Euro-area currencies. First, using dynamic panel techniques, we estimate an error correction model for the dollar real exchange rate versus seven developed countries, four of them Euro-area members. Second, we aggregate the European variables and estimate a model for the Euro-dollar real exchange rate using time series techniques. After identification and model selection, the same specification can be adopted in the two cases, in an eclectic model including real interest rate and productivity differentials, together with relative fiscal policy and net foreign asset positions. This…

Lifestyle recommendations for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome: an international panel recommendation.
2017
The importance of metabolic syndrome (MetS) lies in its associated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as other harmful conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this report, the available scientific evidence on the associations between lifestyle changes and MetS and its components is reviewed to derive recommendations for MetS prevention and management. Weight loss through an energy-restricted diet together with increased energy expenditure through physical activity contribute to the prevention and treatment of MetS. A Mediterranean-type diet, with or without energy restriction, is an effective treatment component. This dietary pattern should be built …
The Effects of IFRS Adoption on the Unconditional Conservatism of Spanish Listed Companies
2017
This paper analyses the effects on unconditional conservatism of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by Spanish listed companies in January 2005. The lack of robustness in the previous evidence justifies analysing this issue from different perspectives. To this end, we use, for the first time in this context, Ahmed and Duellman’s methodology (J. Account. Econ., 2007). In its design, these authors consider the impact of growth options and other future incomes, controlling for the idiosyncratic factors that the literature has found to condition this type of conservatism. Additionally, beyond the pooled regression techniques usually used, we use econome…
Selection correction in panel data models: An application to the estimation of females' wage equations
2007
In recent years a number of panel estimators have been suggested for sample selection models, where both the selection equation and the equation of interest contain individual effects which are correlated with the explanatory variables. Not many studies exist that use these methods in practise. We present and compare alternative estimators, and apply them to a typical problem in applied econometrics: the estimation of the wage returns to experience for females. We discuss the assumptions each estimator imposes on the data, and the problems that occur in our applications. This should be particularly useful to practitioners who consider using such estimators in their own application. All esti…
Dealing with spatial data pooled over time in statistical models
2012
Recent developments in spatial econometrics have been devoted to spatio-temporal data and how spatial panel data structure should be modeled. Little effort has been devoted to the way one must deal with spatial data pooled over time. This paper presents the characteristics of spatial data pooled over time and proposes a simple way to take into account unidirectional temporal effect as well as multidirectional spatial effect in the estimation process. An empirical example, using data on 25,357 single family homes sold in Lucas County, OH (USA), between 1993 and 1998 (available in the MatLab library), is used to illustrate the potential of the approach proposed.
Changes of 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-Carboxylic Acid Oxidase Activity in Stressed Pinus Sylvestris Needles
2001
Stimulation of ethylene biosynthesis in pine needles by hydrogen peroxide and sodium bisulfite coincided with the activation of ACC oxidase at the level of protein synthesis. Decrease in ethylene production at high concentrations of sodium bisulfite (above 7 mM) was apparently due to inhibition of ACC oxidase activity. Treatment of pine needles with aminotriazole caused an inhibition of both ethylene production and ACC oxidase activity. Both methylviologen and methyl jasmonate stimulated ACC oxidase activity in a concentration-dependent manner with no parallel changes in ethylene production. The presented results suggest that ACC oxidase plays an important role in regulation of ethylene for…
Evaluación de escritos históricos; Historia de la traducción japonesa; Ryōei, Motoki
2013
The first part of this paper revisits the rationale for examining historical views on translation and offers examples of questions that can help researchers—particularly those new to the study of translation history—contextualize and evaluate historical writings on translation. The second part applies some of these questions to a study of the relatively unknown writings of Motoki Ryōei, an eighteenth-century Japanese translator of European scientific works, in an indirect attempt to demonstrate how such questions, although best combined with a more holistic framework, can help researchers delve beyond the obvious historical facts
Modeling temporal treatment effects with zero inflated semi-parametric regression models: The case of local development policies in France
2017
International audience; A semi-parametric approach is proposed to estimate the variation along time of the effects of two distinct public policies that were devoted to boost rural development in France over a similar period of time. At a micro data level, it is often observed that the dependent variable, such as local employment, does not vary along time, so that we face a kind of zero inflated phenomenon that cannot be dealt with a continuous response model. We introduce a conditional mixture model which combines a mass at zero and a continuous response. The suggested zero inflated semi-parametric statistical approach relies on the flexibility and modularity of additive models with the abi…
