Spatial risks and complex systems: methodological perspectives
2007
Research on risk and industrial catastrophes question the complexity theories. Besides the concepts of complexity which lead us to reconsider concepts of risk, hazard and vulnerability, we propose to think about more practical aspects, for example the modelling of human behaviour in crisis situations. The link between concepts as critical self-organization, emergence, bifurcation, and the methods in the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) used to model them is however difficult. In this paper, we present ongoing analysis on the key concepts of risk science, such as hazards and catastrophes. We propose to enrich them with complex systems theories. First, we present methodological persp…

Intratympanic treatment with dexamethasone as first-line or salvage therapy in sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Results of a retrospective study
2014
Aim: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a condition of emergency in Otolaryngology. Although there is no universally accepted treatment protocol, corticosteroids, intravenous and oral, are the most common treatment The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of intratympanic administration of dexamethasone as first line therapy, or as a rescue therapy after treatment with systemic steroids in patients not responders. Methods: The population, consisting of 85 patients referred to our unit from January 2010 to December 2013, was divided into two groups according to the treatment protocol performed. We also analyzed possible variables that may affect the response to treatment such …
Trigeminal Projections to the Dorsal Thalamus in a Lacertid Lizard, Podarcis hispanica
1998
Trigeminothalamic projections in the lizard Podarcis hispanica were investigated by means of biotinylated dextranamine (BDA) injections into different nuclei of the dorsal thalamus. Previous studies of lizards found a projection from the sensory trigeminal nuclei in the brainstem to the nuclei ventromedialis and ventrolateralis of the ventral thalamus. The present results show that, in addition to these projections to ventral thalamic nuclei, neurons of the nucleus of the descending tract and the principal sensory nucleus project contralaterally to the pretectal nucleus lentiformis thalami and bilaterally to the nucleus dorsolateralis anterior thalami of the dorsal thalam…
Newest Results on the Chemistry and Pharmacology of TCM Drugs Containing Triterpene and Steroid Saponins
2012
The aim of this review is to provide newest results in the chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical studies of saponins-containing TCM drugs, some of them being listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It appears that literature on triterpene saponins is more abundant than that of steroid saponins, and ginseng occupies a prominent position in the list. However, other TCM drugs are well documented in recent years belonging to the genera Astragalus, Gynostemma, Bupleurum, Clematis, Dipsacus, Platycodon, Gypsophila, Anemarrhena, Lonicera, Paris, Dioscerea, Tribulus, and Ophiopogon. From a Pharmacological point of view, the most relevant results have been obtained with the cancer-related activity and …
The distinction betweenChondrophycus patentirameusandC. paniculatus(Ceramiales, Rhodophyta)
2000
The red algae Chondrophycus patentirameus (Montagne) Nam (‘patentiramea’) and L. paniculata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh were investigated on the basis of type material and recent collections. Both species show the following features: (i) production of two vegetative pericentral cells from each axial segment; (ii) absence of secondary pit connections between cortical cells; (iii) lack of projecting cortical cells near the apex; (iv) absence of lenticular thickenings in the walls of medullary cells; and (v) perpendicular arrangement of tetrasporangia, each of which is produced from the second pericentral cell in each fertile segment with no additional tetrasporangial pericentral cells. However, C. …
Relationship between perception of smile esthetics and orthodontic treatment in Spanish patients
2018
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0201102 One of the main objectives of orthodontic treatment is to achieve an esthetic smile. This study set out to analyze differences in the perception of smile esthetics among patients before and after receiving orthodontic treatment. 250 Spanish patients analyzed a single photograph in which, by means of computer software, midline diastema, black triangle, gingival margin of the left central incisor, and gingival (ªgummyº) smile were altered. Each patient analyzed these images before and after undergoing orthodontic treatment. Patient…
Intratympanic Dexamethasone/Hyaluronic Acid Mix as an Adjunct to Intravenous Steroid and Vasoactive Treatment in Patients With Severe Idiopathic Sudd…
2011
To evaluate differences in effectiveness (hearing recovery rates) between idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) patients treated with intravenous therapy alone and patients treated with a combination of intravenous and intratympanic therapy.Retrospective case review.Tertiary referral hospital center.Ninety-four patients with moderate ISSNHL treated with an intravenous steroid and vasoactive regimen (duration of therapy, 9 ± 2.76 d) and 76 patients with severe ISSNHL treated with a combination regimen of intravenous and intratympanic therapy (duration of therapy, 10 ± 2.71 d) were reviewed. In the latter patients' group, a series of 3 intratympanic injections of a dexamethaso…

Psychometrics of the Spanish Version of the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorders (SCAARED)
2021
Objectives: To translate and validate the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorders (SCAARED) questionnaire into Spanish.Method: The original SCAARED was translated into Spanish and administered to a non-clinical sample of 131 university students (92.4% women, mean age 22 years) in Valencia, Spain. To assess the concurrent validity of the SCAARED, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale−21(DASS) and the Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were also administered. Test-retest reliability was evaluated 2 weeks after the first administration. Results: The internal consistency of SCAARED was high (α = 0.91) and the stability of the measurement was also high (test-retest 0.81). The results of the Exp…
