2018
Social media is widely recognized as a challenging new communication technology in both economic and social contexts. The present article explores how banks have exploited this technology in the range of consumer retail banking services offered by 100 leading global banks on the three major social networking sites (SNS): Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Viewing social network (SN) banking as a separate delivery channel and offering a working definition of SN banking, the article shows that banks have been more cautious than other businesses in using SNS. The available services are classified on nine main dimensions: marketing, financial education and advice, information support, customer sup…

Efficiency vs. values : Institutional logics, situated rationality, and performance measurement in a cooperative bank
2023
This qualitative case study explores how situated rationality is achieved and maintained between two coexisting institutional logics, ‘global’ financial efficiency and ‘local’ customer-owners, around a performance measurement system in a large cooperative bank. We focus especially on the relationship between financial performance measures and softer, cooperative and communal organisational values. The results highlight that communal values may be effectively used to smooth and manage managerial contradictions; thus, situated rationality for operations can be achieved and maintained. This may also explain the resilience and success of communal values and cooperatively formed organisations in…
Antecedents of Market Orientation in The Banking Sector During Its Digital Transformation

This is evident in the banking sector where the traditional banks are gradually being challenged by digital native competitors and growing customer demands. Consequently, this study examines what it takes to be market oriented in the banking sector at the age of increasing digitalization. Specifically, we focus on developing the theory on the antecedents of MO and examine how banks can regain market orientation under changing market conditions. Although Market Orientation (MO) has been a widely studied concept that has been applied in numerous diff…

Implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on market orientation in retail banking
2021
AbstractThis qualitative study examines the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the implementation of market orientation (MO) in the context of retail banking. The findings show that MO was significantly reflected in the behaviors of banks upon encountering the COVID-19 situation, with the banks increasing their MO in response to the crisis. This study finds subcategories based on the empirical data that explain the implementation of MO in more detail. Overall, the findings provide valuable conceptual and managerial insights into the modus operandi of banks during a crisis and offer new best practices for the banking industry.

Crowdfunding in the banking industry : adjusting to a digital era
2017
In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the funding ability of banks has declined resulting in a financial void for riskier enterprises, such as startups and early-stage companies. New financial service providers have emerged in response to the capital deficiency. A particularly prominent incarnation of alternative finance is crowdfunding, where the funding is gathered directly from the market, from several individuals, who invest relatively small sums to compound the target amount. Financial institutions are contemplating the use of crowdfunding, not only for its business implications but also as a preparation for the potential threats it may impose on the traditional finance indu…
