Application of Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy to Cultural Heritage: characterization and preservation of ancient paper artwork

2016

Within the cultural heritage the characterization and conservation of artworks based on paper represents a significant issue for both restorers and scientists. The paper deterioration is affected by the degree of hydrolytic and oxidative reactions which occur upon aging. Moreover, the durability of cellulose fibers depends on the intrinsic composition/structure of the paper as well as on the conservation conditions, such as temperature and humidity. The structural and dynamical characterization of the cellulose matrix and of the water confined within its pores is therefore of central interest. Our working hypothesis is that WATER DYNAMICS is one of the main determinants of paper degradation…

On static instability and estimates for critical velocities of axially moving orthotropic plates under inhomogeneous tension

2012

In this study, models for axially moving orthotropic plates are investigated analytically. Linearised Kirchhoff plate theory is used, and the energy forms of steady-state models are considered. With the help of the energy forms,ho- mogeneous and inhomogeneous tension profiles, some limits for the critical web velocity are found analytically. A numerical example is given about effects of the shear moduls in the case of an inhomogenous tenstion profile. nonPeerReviewed

Application of the lattice-Boltzmann method for simulating attachment of ink particles in paper

2012

In this thesis the basic properties of the lattice- Boltzmann method (LBM) are introduced. Also, a particle model used in combination with LBM is presented, and the combined model is then applied to ink propagation in samples of paper. Simulation geometries were acquired with two different methods, namely confocal microscopy and X-ray tomography. The effect of simulation parameters and paper properties on ink propagation was considered. Promising results were acquired with both image acquiring techniques, but for a better consistency between simulations and experiments the methods should be combined so as to get images that include the full thickness of the sample together with the ink dist…

Added-Mass Based Efficient Fluid–Structure Interaction Model for Dynamics of Axially Moving Panels with Thermal Expansion

2020

The paper considers the analysis of a traveling panel, submerged in axially flowing fluid. In order to accurately model the dynamics and stability of a lightweight moving material, the interaction between the material and the surrounding air must be taken into account. The lightweight material leads to the inertial contribution of the surrounding air to the acceleration of the panel becoming significant. This formulation is novel and the case complements our previous studies on the field. The approach described in this paper allows for an efficient semi-analytical solution, where the reaction pressure of the fluid flow is analytically represented by an added-mass model in terms of the panel…
