Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the most abundant waste produced from palm oil mills. POME waste products from palm oil mills can pollute the surrounding environment. The main objective of this study was to determine the use of POME on soil fertility and increase the growth of oil palm plants and minimize negative impacts on the environment. The results of the research obtained are a combination of primary data (results of analysis carried out in oil palm plantations owned by PT PMP, Maybrat Regency before the POME application) and secondary data (results of analysis carried out at Angsana Estate oil palm plantations, South Kalimantan after POME application). The results obtained indicate…

The Orange Peel: An Outstanding Source of Chemical Resources
2021
Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck is a very common cultivar belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is largely diffused in several areas of the world characterized by mild to warm climate conditions. Its abundant worldwide production (up to 107 Tons. per year) and consumption both as the edible part of the fruit and as several types of derivative products imply the production of a huge amount of waste, such as the fruit pomace. Several ways of recycling this material have been developed in recent years: employment as fertilizer, fodder ingredient, and even cloth material. However, the chemical added value of Citrus sinensis peel has been underestimated despite the diversified and significant content…
Pyrolysis of vegetable oil soaps—Palm, olive, rapeseed and castor oils
2011
Abstract Saponified, palm, olive, rapeseed and castor oils were pyrolysed (at 750 °C for 20 s) by pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass selective and flame ionisation detection (Py-GC/MSD and FID) to clarify their thermochemical behaviours. The liquefiable compounds recovered from palm, olive and rapeseed oils mainly contained linear alkenes (up to C 19 ) and alkanes (up to C 17 ), both similar to those found in gasoline (C 4 –C 10 ) and diesel fuel (C 11 –C 22 ) boiling range fractions of petroleum, whereas in the case of castor oil a significant amount of undesired oxygen-containing products (e.g., ketones and phenols) were formed. The obtained data on reaction mechanisms can also be uti…
Drimane-type Sesquiterpene Coumarins from Ferula gummosa Fruits Enhance Doxorubicin Uptake in Doxorubicin-resistant Human Breast Cancer Cell Line
2014
ABSTRACT Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the main cause of failure in the chemotherapy of cancer patients. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of sesquiterpene coumarins of Ferula gummosa fruits on P-glycoprotein (P-gp)–mediated MDR. Drimane-type sesquiterpene coumarins from the fruits of F. gummosa were extracted with dichloromethane and subjected to column chromatography. The effects of the isolated compounds on P-gp–mediated MDR were evaluated in the breast cancer cell line MCF-7 which shows high resistance to doxoribicin (MCF-7/Dox). Phytochemical investigation of dichloromethane extract of F. gummosa fruits resulted in three sesquiterpene coumarins including conferone (1), mo…
Changes in Chemokines and Chemokine Receptors Expression in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease
2018
The amyloid precursor protein plus presenilin-1 (APP/PS1) mice are a frequently-used model for Alzheimer's disease studies (AD). However, the data relevant to which proteins are involved in inflammatory mechanism are not sufficiently well-studied using the AD mouse model. Using behavioral studies, quantitative RT-PCR and Western-blot techniques, significant findings were determined by the expression of proteins involved in inflammation comparing APP/PS1 and Wild type mice. Increased GFAP expression could be associated with the elevation in number of reactive astrocytes. IL-3 is involved in inflammation and ABDF1 intervenes normally in the transport across cell membranes and both were found …
Intensity-modulated extended-field chemoradiation plus simultaneous integrated boost in the pre-operative treatment of locally advanced cervical canc…
2015
Objective: To investigate the feasibility and determine the recommended pre-operative intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) dose of extended-field chemoradiation along with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) dose escalation. Methods: A radiation dose of 40Gy over 4 weeks, 2Gy/fraction, was delivered to the tumour and the lymphatic drainage (planning target volume, PTV3), which encompassed a volume larger than standard (common iliac lymphatic area up to its apex, in front of the L3 vertebra), concurrently with chemotherapy (cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil). Radiation dose was escalated to the pelvis (PTV2) and to the macroscopic disease (PTV1) with the SIB-IMRT strategy. Three dose levels we…
Traumatic experiences in childhood and psychopathy: a study on a sample of violent offenders from Italy
2013
Background: The link between early traumatic experiences of abuse/neglect and criminal behaviour has been widely demonstrated. Less is known, however, about the relationship between these experiences and the development of psychopathic personality. Objective: This study investigated childhood relational trauma in a group of violent offenders from Italy. We hypothesised a higher level of early relational trauma associated with higher scores on psychopathy. Method: Twenty-two offenders convicted for violent crimes aged 22-60 (M=38, SD=11) participated in this study. Participants were selected by the Italian justice system for an experimental research programme aiming at the evaluation of psyc…
`Children Need Their Parents More Than a Pizza in the Fridge!'
2008
The aim of this study is to find constructions of parental responsibility by analysing letters sent by readers to a newspaper on the topic of parenting and parental responsibility. The study takes a methodological approach, focusing on the meanings of responsibility and looking at different portrayals of parenthood. Three dimensions of responsibility (beginning responsibility, diminished sense of responsibility and obligating responsibility) emerged from the analysis. These dimensions relate to different meanings attributed to parental responsibility, for instance, `responsibility for making choices'. Parenthood is variously portrayed along the three dimensions. Parental responsibility cre…
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on incidence, time of diagnosis and delivery of healthcare among paediatric oncology patients in Germany in 2020: Evi…
2021
ABSTRACT Background The indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care and timely diagnosis is of increasing concern. We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on incidence, time of diagnosis and delivery of healthcare among paediatric oncology patients in Germany in 2020. Methods We analysed incident paediatric cancer cases diagnosed in 0- to 17-year olds in Germany in 2020 using data of the German Childhood Cancer Registry. Absolute numbers and age-standardised incidence rates (ASR) in 2020 were compared to the previous five years (2015–2019). Moreover, we conducted a survey with open-ended questions, gathering perceptions of the diagnostic process and healthcare delive…
