Fluid Intelligence and Automatic Neural Processes in Facial Expression Perception: An Event-Related Potential Study
2015
The relationship between human fluid intelligence and social-emotional abilities has been a topic of considerable interest. The current study investigated whether adolescents with different intellectual levels had different automatic neural processing of facial expressions. Two groups of adolescent males were enrolled: a high IQ group and an average IQ group. Age and parental socioeconomic status were matched between the two groups. Participants counted the numbers of the central cross changes while paired facial expressions were presented bilaterally in an oddball paradigm. There were two experimental conditions: a happy condition, in which neutral expressions were standard stimuli (p = 0.…
The Fluid City Paradigm: a deeper innovation
2016
Waterfront regeneration needs to be disruptive: a paradigm shift and a deeper innovation of methods and tools must be set up in order to act in the changing times we live. In current global crisis, a true metamorphosis, the strong flows of financial, social and relational capitals that powered regeneration of urban waterfronts over the last twenty years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract big projects and rich investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development, but the cities have deep socio-cultural diversity an…
Closing the sensing-reasoning-actuating loop in resource-constrained WSANs through distributed symbolic processing
2015
Many issues in creating complex applications for pervasive environments are primarily due to the effort required to integrate perception, reasoning and actuating tasks in an efficient and homogeneous way, especially when the underlying infrastructure consists of wirelessly networked embedded devices. To mitigate the complexity of the actual implementation, satisfactory programming paradigms supporting the integration and coordination among heterogeneous devices are required. In this paper we show how a distributed symbolic processing approach that is particularly suited for resource constrained devices, such as the nodes of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN), may be apt to the pu…

L’incriminazione dello smuggling of migrants in Europa: una ricognizione comparatistica
2019
Il lavoro opera una ricognizione comparatistica di varie discipline del migrant smuggling: internazionale (Protocollo ONU), sovranazionale (UE Facilitation package) e nazionali (Italia, Portogallo, Spagna, Germania), a partire dai dati raccolti nel corso della ricerca "The New Era of Smuggling in the Mediterranean Sea" (2017-19), finanziata da PMI
Fango pannonico. Un paradigma populista per Miroslav Krleza
2019
As an obsessive keyword, the Pannonian mud appears in several writings of Miroslav Krleza. It represents the core of Croatian periphery, in particular the Podravina region, which was for long time untouched by modernity, and oppressed by feudal governments even after the fall of the Austrian Empire, from 1918 onwards. In this timeless place watered by the river Drava, the mud acquires a paradigmatic role like a phenomenon that causes historical conflicts. However, its ambiguous status of metahistorical symbol of a long lasting collapse is a contradictory factor, because of the consequences arising from it are unpredictable. As a contribute to this paradoxical attitude some images occur in K…
Gestures in Human-Computer Interaction – Just Another Modality?
2010
The traditional framework in human-computer studies is based on a simple input-output model of interaction. In many cases, however, splitting interaction into input and output is not necessarily appropriate. Gestures work as a good example of a modality which is difficult or inappropriate to be conceptualised within the traditional input-output paradigm. In the search for a more appropriate interaction paradigm, gestures, as modality, have potential in working as a meta-modality, in terms of which all other modalities could be analysed. This paper proposes the use of gestures and gestural metaphors in a central role in interaction design, and presents a case study as an illustration of the …
Catalan Morphology and Low-level Patterns in a Network Model
2005
The fact that more specific or low-level morphological patterns may coexist with the most general or abstract ones is a characteristic insight of Cognitive Morphology. According to the bottom-up approach of the model, it is even to be expected that low-level patterns may have a more relevant role than the most inclusive and abstract ones. On the basis of the analysis of an aspect of Catalan inflection (velar verbs of the second conjugation) and one aspect of Catalan word-formation (complex words with the prefixoid radio-), we will show the advantages of incorporating to the model salient low-level patterns and the local paradigmatic relations in which they are based. info:eu-repo/semantics/…
