Gender Equality and Maternal Burnout: A 40-Country Study

2022

International audience; In Western countries, recent decades have witnessed a revolution toward gender equality. Inequalities have been greatly reduced in areas such as education or employment. Because inequalities lead to distress, this development has largely benefited women. One notable exception is the realm of parenting, which has remained rife with inequalities even in the most egalitarian countries. We hypothesized that experiencing inequality in parenting when one holds egalitarian values and raising a child in a country characterized by a high level of gender equality in other areas, increases mothers’ psychological distress in the specific area of parenting. Multilevel modeling an…

Detecting multiple copies in tampered images

2010

Copy-move forgeries are parts of the image that are duplicated elsewhere into the same image, often after being modified by geometrical transformations. In this paper we present a method to detect these image alterations, using a SIFT-based approach. First we describe a state of the art SIFT-point matching method, which inspired our algorithm, then we compare it with our SIFT-based approach, which consists of three parts: keypoint clustering, cluster matching, and texture analysis. The goal is to find copies of the same object, i.e. clusters of points, rather than points that match. Cluster matching proves to give better results than single point matching, since it returns a complete and co…

The Obesity Paradox Predicts the Second Wave of COVID-19 to Be Severe in Western Countries.

2021

While COVID-19 infection and mortality rates are soaring in Western countries, Southeast Asian countries have successfully avoided the second wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic despite high population density. We provide a biochemical hypothesis for the connection between low COVID-19 incidence, mortality rates, and high visceral adiposity in Southeast Asian populations. The SARS-CoV-2 virus uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a gateway into the human body. Although the highest expression levels of ACE2 are found in people’s visceral adipose tissue in Southeast Asia, this does not necessarily make them vulnerable to COVID-19. Hypothetically, high levels of visceral adiposity cause s…

Growth in a time of external imbalances

2019

Abstract Globalization and financial integration have increased in the last three decades giving rise to cumulated large external imbalances. The question we address in this paper is whether economic growth can be affected by these external imbalances. We estimate an augmented growth equation with the external stock position of the countries measured by the net foreign asset position. Unlike previous literature, we use non-parametric methods that capture non-linearities and heterogeneity, and apply them to a sample that includes 106 developed and developing countries for the period 1983-2011. Contrary to the neoclassical theory, we find that improvements in the external position foster grow…

Sex-specific differences in mortality and the obesity paradox of patients with myocardial infarction ages70 y.

2017

Abstract Objectives Recent studies suggest an obesity survival paradox in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). The aim of this study was to investigate the in-hospital mortality of patients aged ≥70 y with acute MI relative to sex and obesity. Methods We selected patients ≥70 y of age with a diagnosis of acute MI based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code I21 in the nationwide database of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany in 2014. We stratified the patients for sex and obesity versus nonobesity, and obesity classes I, II, and III. We compared the in-hospital mortality of these groups. Results In 2014, 122 607 patients ≥70 y of age were diagnosed with…

Approximated overlap error for the evaluation of feature descriptors on 3D scenes

2013

This paper presents a new framework to evaluate feature descriptors on 3D datasets. The proposed method employs the approximated overlap error in order to conform with the reference planar evaluation case of the Oxford dataset based on the overlap error. The method takes into account not only the keypoint centre but also the feature shape and it does not require complex data setups, depth maps or an accurate camera calibration. Only a ground-truth fundamental matrix should be computed, so that the dataset can be freely extended by adding further images. The proposed approach is robust to false positives occurring in the evaluation process, which do not introduce any relevant changes in the …

Paradoxical social representations of linky smart meters and privacy paradox

2021

Consumer participation to electricity consumption reduction (ECR) has become a major challenge in a context of Energy Transition. The Linky french Smart Meter, which use contributes to ECR, is confronted to many controversies reflecting the social legitimation at stake which underlies its evaluation. This article proposes to study privacy paradox regarding Linky Smart Meter use, mobilizing the conceptual background of consumer psychological empowerment. In that aim, a social representation analysis was conducted involving 271 respondents. Results highlight, on one hand, a privacy paradox involving 3 out of the 4 dimensions of psychological empowerment, and on another hand, the presence of m…

Paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale from central venous catheter thrombosis: A potential cause of stroke

2020

Paradoxical embolism refers to a potential condition in which an embolus arising from a venous source crosses into the systemic circulation through a right-to-left cardiac shunt causing an arterial embolism. A 39-year-old woman carrier of a central venous catheter (CVC) without evident risk factors for stroke, developed an acute right homonymous hemianopia during hemodialysis. On neuroimaging, an infarct in the territory of the left posterior cerebral artery was demonstrated. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a patent foramen ovale (PFO) and a large fluctuating thrombus in the right atrium on the tip of the CVC, thus allowing a diagnosis of ischemic stroke from paradoxical embolism.…

A Hierarchical Detection and Response System to Enhance Security Against Lethal Cyber-Attacks in UAV Networks

2018

International audience; Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) networks have not yet received considerable research attention. Specifically, security issues are a major concern because such networks, which carry vital information, are prone to various attacks. In this paper, we design and implement a novel intrusion detection and response scheme, which operates at the UAV and ground station levels, to detect malicious anomalies that threaten the network. In this scheme, a set of detection and response techniques are proposed to monitor the UAV behaviors and categorize them into the appropriate list (normal, abnormal, suspect, and malicious) according to the detected cyber-attack. We focus on the m…
