Literary translation and the parallax gap: reflections on a pilot questionnaire

2010

This article is the English version of "La traducción literaria y la brecha de paralaje: reflexiones a partir de un cuestionario piloto" by Fruela Fernández. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. Historically, social research has alternated between conceptual opposites that social constructionism tries to reconcile. By analyzing the issues raised and responses given to a pilot questionnaire completed by literary translators, this article discusses approaches that could be applied to sociological research in literary translation. Special emp…

VizieR Online Data Catalog: 46 open clusters GaiaDR2 HR diagrams (Gaia Collaboration, 2018)

2018

We have determined the membership of 46 open clusters. For the nine clusters within 250pc we determined optimised parallaxes based on the combined information extracted from the measured parallax and proper motion values. These clusters are : in Tables A1a & A3: alphaPer, Blanco1, ComaBer, Hyades, IC2391, IC2602, NGC2451A, Pleiades, Praesepe. The remaining 37 clusters are in Table A1b & A4: Coll140, IC4651, IC4665, IC4725, IC4756, NGC0188, NGC0752, NGC0869, NGC0884, NGC1039, NGC1901, NGC2158, NGC2168, NGC2232, NGC2323, NGC2360, NGC2422, NGC2423, NGC2437, NGC2447, NGC2516, NGC2547, NGC2548, NGC2682, NGC3228, NGC3532, NGC6025, NGC6281, NGC6405, NGC6475, NGC6633, NGC6774, NGC6793, NGC7092, Sto…

Undercurrents and crosscurrents revealed: Sinéad Morrissey’s parallactic poetry

2015

International audience; In Parallax (2013), her most recent collection of poems, Sinéad Morrissey is attracted to affections “embedded in our cells”, to realities “on the periphery”, to “what happens outside”, to “the accidental”, to “world[s] that can’t be entered”, to “conversation[s] no one else can hear”. She also explores oblique, alternative perspectives that she describes in “The Mutoscope” as “what-the-butler-saw perspective[s]”. Parallax – the optical phenomenon used in astronomy to measure the distance of nearby stars and celestial bodies - serves as the prime metaphor for Morrissey’s poetical and metaphysical quest: the implications of the angle of vision and distance on percepti…

Large Depth-of-Field Integral Microscopy by Use of a Liquid Lens

2018

Integral microscopy is a 3D imaging technique that permits the recording of spatial and angular information of microscopic samples. From this information it is possible to calculate a collection of orthographic views with full parallax and to refocus computationally, at will, through the 3D specimen. An important drawback of integral microscopy, especially when dealing with thick samples, is the limited depth of field (DOF) of the perspective views. This imposes a significant limitation on the depth range of computationally refocused images. To overcome this problem, we propose here a new method that is based on the insertion, at the pupil plane of the microscope objective, of an electrical…

Historically, social research has alternated between conceptual opposites that social constructionism tries t…

Full parallax three-dimensional display from Kinect v1 and v2

2016

We exploit the two different versions of Kinect, v1 and v2, for the calculation of microimages projected onto integral-imaging displays. Our approach is based on composing a three-dimensional (3-D) point cloud from a captured depth map and RGB information. These fused 3-D maps permit to generate an integral image after projecting the information through a virtual pinhole array. In our analysis, we take into account that each of the Kinect devices has its own inherent capacities and individualities. We illustrate our analysis with some imaging experiments, provide the distinctive differences between the two Kinect devices, and finally conclude that Kinect v2 allows the display of 3-D images …

Full-parallax 3D display from the hole-filtered depth information

2015

In this paper we introduce an efficient hole-filling algorithm for synthetic generation of microimages that are displayed on an integral imaging monitor. We apply the joint bilateral filter and the median filter to the captured depth map. We introduce in any step of the iterative algorithm with the data from a new Kinect capture. As a result, this algorithm can improve the quality of the depth maps and remove unmeasured depth holes effectively. This refined depth information enables to create a tidy integral image, which can be projected into an integral imaging monitor. In this way the monitor can display 3D images with continuous views, full parallax and abundant 3D reconstructed scene fo…

AX-PET: Concept, proof of principle and first results with phantoms

2010

AX-PET is a novel PET concept based on long crystals axially arranged and orthogonal Wavelength shifter (WLS) strips, both individually readout by Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes (G-APD). Its design was conceived in order to reduce the parallax error and simultaneously improve spatial resolution and sensitivity. The assessment of the AX-PET concept and potential was carried out through a set of measurements comprising individual module characterizations and scans in coincidence mode of point-like and extended sources. The estimated energy and spatial resolutions from point-like measurements are R FWHM =11.6% (at 511 keV) and 1.7–1.9 mm (FWHM) respectively as measured with point-like sour…

Measuring trunk orientation with a CMOS camera: feasibility and accuracy.

2007

International audience; The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a new tool to objectively quantify trunk orientation at the bedside, especially dedicated to the measurement of the lateropulsion in acute and subacute stroke patients. We developed software to analyze 2D movement with a CMOS camera (Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000) and to calculate the orientation of a segment defined by two color markers. First, the accuracy, reproducibility and noise when measuring segment orientations were evaluated with the CMOS camera placed in different positions, and second trunk orientation was measured in static and in dynamic conditions both with a CMOS camera and with a gold standard 3D vid…

Visual motion integration controls attractiveness of objects in walking flies and a mobile robot

2008

Walking fruit flies are attracted by near-by objects. They estimate the distance to these objects by the parallax motion of their images on the retina. Here we provide evidence from robot simulations that distance is assessed by motion integration over large parts of the visual field and time periods of 0.5 s to 2 s. The process in flies is not selective to image motion created by the self-motion of the fly but also sensitive to object motion and to the pattern contrast of objects. Added visual motion (e.g. oscillations) makes objects more attractive than their stationary counterparts. Front-to-back motion, the natural parallax motion on the eyes of a forward-translating fly, is preferred. …
