Minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles 2018 (MISEV2018):a position statement of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicl…

2018

The last decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of scientific publications describing physiological and pathological functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a collective term covering various subtypes of cell-released, membranous structures, called exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, apoptotic bodies, and many other names. However, specific issues arise when working with these entities, whose size and amount often make them difficult to obtain as relatively pure preparations, and to characterize properly. The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) proposed Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles ("MISEV") guidelines fo…

Demographic characterization and genetic variability of the Girgentana goat breed by the analysis of genealogical data

2004

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the actual Sicilian Girgentana population structure by the analysis ofgenealogical data. Statistics show that in 1983 the population consisted of 30,000 Girgentana goats; ten years lateralmost 98% of the entire Girgentana population disappeared. The remaining population consists of 461 individuals (134males and 327 females), with 368 living animals. The effective population size is 380 individuals. The inbreeding rate pergeneration was equal to 0.13%. The average estimated inbreeding level within the living male population was equal to0.8% (0-15%); and the average inbreeding level within the living female population was equal to 0.7% (0-31%…

Mixis strategies and resting eeg production of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats

1993

A dynamic model based on six differential equations has been developed to explore the control of mixis of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats. The equations give variation rates of amictic females, three stages of mictic females, males and resting eggs. The model takes into account some constraints on mixis (e.g., male-female encounter probability and effort involved in resting egg production) and its predictions have been generated by computer simulation using parameter values from the literature. For simulation, a time-dependent birth rate function was assumed to account for changes in the environment, and several mixis patterns (i.e., moment of mixis induction and mictic rate …

Measurements of cardiac Pre-Ejection period using a combo PPG-ECG system

2015

The extraction of biomedical parameters, for early disease detection, is assuming today an ever increasing and fundamental importance. In particular, in the cardiologic field, the preejection period (PEP) is the duration of the iso-volumetric left ventricle contraction until the aortic valve opening. This parameter is a non-constant additive delay, which rapidly changes in response to stress, emotion and physical effort. To estimate this period, several wearable electronics devices have been developed in literature, and among them the Impedance Cardiogram equipment is the most used. However, these systems are often expensive and bulky. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective and easy to …

Ovarian size and blood flow in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and their correlations with some endocrine parameters

2005

Objective: To determine how common polycystic ovarian morphology may be in women given the clinical diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism and whether certain hormonal factors correlate with ovarian morphology and blood flow. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Two academic endocrinology centers in Italy. Patient(s): Three hundred twenty-six women with PCOS and 50 age-matched and weight-matched ovulatory women. Intervention(s): Ultrasound assessment of ovarian morphology in patients and controls and ovarian blood flow and fasting hormone levels in a subset of 50 patients and matched controls. Main Outcome Measure(s): Ovarian morpholog…

An experimental campaign to investigate sustainability issues in Single Point Incremental Forming processes

2012

Sustainability issues are crucial topics in manufacturing and the environmental burdens reduction for processes is highly requested. In particular, the environmental sustainability evaluation for sheet metal forming processes is an widely investigated topic since there is still a lack of knowledge on modeling issues. The main tasks are related to a more efficient materials use and to energy savings. Moreover, forming technologies environmental impacts are essentially process-dependent. A deep analysis of the cause-effect linkages (between process and material parameters and energy consumption, for instance), within each process, would be necessary to properly model environmental impacts and…

Rotational spectrum of silyl chloride: hyperfine structure and equilibrium geometry

2012

The Lamb-dip technique was employed to record the rotational spectra of two isotopic species of silyl chloride, namely (28)SiH3Cl and (29)SiH3Cl, in order to investigate their hyperfine structure. High-accuracy quantum-chemical computations were employed to predict the hyperfine parameters involved and to support the experimental investigation. Analysis of the experimental spectra led to an improvement in the accuracy of the known spectroscopic constants as well as allowed us to determine additional spectroscopic parameters for the first time. Furthermore, the equilibrium structure of silyl chloride was reinvestigated using both theoretical and experimental data. The best theoretical and se…
