Effects of electrical and mechanical parameters on the transient voltage stability of a fixed speed wind turbine

2011

Abstract In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a wind turbine connected to the grid is examined. The model of the fixed speed wind turbine has been developed with the Simulink simulation tool (Matlab Inc.) It is composed of the induction generator, the shaft system, an aerodynamic model of the wind turbine rotor and the pitch control system. Using this model, a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the faulty line. The rigorous implementation of the simulink model allowed the authors to evaluate the exact dependence of various electrical parameters for the induction generator on voltage stability. Furthermore, the effects of wind turbine mechan…

Energy models for fatigue life estimation under uniaxial random loading. Part II: Verification of the model

2001

Abstract The paper concerns verification of the energy model for the fatigue life determination under the uniaxial random and variable-amplitude stress state. Application of the energy parameter for the fatigue life calculation using the algorithmic method under the random and variable-amplitude uniaxial tension–compression proves that most results of the fatigue life calculation are included in the scatter band with the coefficient determined during the uniaxial cyclic tests. The strain energy density parameter seems to be efficient for the fatigue life determination in the ranges of high and low numbers of cycles. The analysis was based on the author's tests and the data from literature. …

Simultaneous zonation and calibration of pipe network parameters

2003

A procedure for simultaneously zoning and calibrating pipe network parameters is proposed and applied to the determination of pipe resistance coefficients. The methodology is aimed at grouping the parameters of all the pipes into a small number of zone parameters, constrained to keep the difference between the computed and the measured water heads below a given tolerance. It is shown that, in the case of nonlooped networks, the methodology leads to a linear minimization problem where the objective function is a measure of the heterogeneity of the estimated parameters. In the case of looped networks an iterative procedure, where the linear problem is coupled with a nonlinear problem having a…

Parameter identification of induction motor model by means of State Space-Vector Model Output Error Minimization

2014

This paper proposes a technique for the off-line estimation of the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of an Induction Machines (IM), and focuses on the application of an algorithm based on the minimization of a suitable cost function involving the differences between the measured stator current direct (sD) and quadrature (sQ) components and the corresponding estimated by the IM state model. This method exploits an entire start-up transient of the IM to estimate all of the 4 electrical parameters of the machine (Rs, Ls, σLs, Tr). It proposes also a set of tests to be made in order to estimate the variation of the magnetic parameters of the IM versus the rotor magnetizing current…

In sewer processes: mathematical model development and sensitivity analysis.

2009

Until now the majority of sewer networks in Italy have been built and managed considering small as well as local wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, pushed by Italian and EU regulations, centralised and large WWTPs are becoming more common in Italy. One major technical aspect caused by the changing from local to centralised WWTPs is the development of significant in-sewer processes. These processes are also emphasized by the building of long interceptor sewers characterized by high hydraulic retention times and absence of tributary sewers. In this paper a model derived from the well known WATS model (Wastewater Aerobic/anaerobic Transformation in Sewers) has been set up and applie…

Effect of pH, substrate and free nitrous acid concentrations on ammonium oxidation rate.

2012

Respirometric techniques have been used to determine the effect of pH, free nitrous acid (FNA) and substrate concentration on the activity of the ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) present in an activated sludge reactor. With this aim, bacterial activity has been measured at different pH values (ranging from 6.2 to 9.7), total ammonium nitrogen concentrations (ranging from 0.1 to 10 mg TAN L-1) and total nitrite concentrations (ranging from 3 to 43 mg NO2-N L-1). According to the results obtained, the most appropriate kinetic expression for the growth of AOB in activated sludge reactors has been established. Substrate half saturation constant and FNA and pH inhibition constants have been obt…

Parameterization of a comprehensive explicit model for single-ring infiltration

2021

International audience; Comprehensive infiltration models can simultaneously describe transient and steady-state infiltration behaviors, and therefore can be applied to a range of experimental conditions. However, satisfactory model accuracy re- quires proper parameterization, including estimating the transition time from transient to steady-state flow conditions (τcrit). This study focused on improving the estimation of two parameters – τcrit and a second constant called a – used in a comprehensive, explicit, two-term model for single ring infiltration (hereafter referred to as the SA model). Different studies have recommended that a should be as low as 0.45 to as high as 0.91. Furthermore…

Influence of Welding Time on Tensile-Shear Strength of Linear Friction Welded Birch (Betula pendula L.) Wood

2015

Linear friction welding of wood is a bonding process applied to wood and during which a stiff bond line is formed by the softening and rehardening of wood components to form a composite material composed mainly of wood fibres embedded in a modified lignin matrix. Unfortunately, the bonds tend to spontaneously delaminate or lose their strength when exposed to moist conditions. Some approaches were previously applied to overcome this problem, but so far a suitable solution has not been found. This paper presents results of applying post-welding thermal modification to reduce the moisture sensitivity of welded wood. The experiments included welding of birch wood, thermal modification under sup…

Respirometry for the Characterization of Heterotrophic Biomass Activity: Application to a MBR Pilot Plant Operated with Two Different Start-Up Strate…

2016

A membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant was operated in two subsequent experimental periods (namely, Periods I and II) with different start-up and sludge withdrawal strategies to study its peculiar biokinetic behavior by using respirometric techniques. Two extreme operational conditions were chosen to investigate the different biomass activity under dynamic or pseudostationary conditions during and after the start-up phases. Particularly, the MBR pilot plant was operated with the same volumetric loading rate (VLR) and permeate flux but differently managed during the start-up phase. In Period I, the MBR pilot plant was started up without sludge inoculum and operated without sludge withdrawal…

Real-time parameter estimation of Zika outbreaks using model averaging

2017

SUMMARYEarly prediction of the final size of any epidemic and in particular for Zika disease outbreaks can be useful for health authorities in order to plan the response to the outbreak. The Richards model is often been used to estimate epidemiological parameters for arboviral diseases based on the reported cumulative cases in single- and multi-wave outbreaks. However, other non-linear models can also fit the data as well. Typically, one follows the so called post selection estimation procedure, i.e., selects the best fitting model out of the set of candidate models and ignores the model uncertainty in both estimation and inference since these procedures are based on a single model. In this…
