CERAD neuropsychological battery total score in multinational mild cognitive impairment and control populations: the AddNeuroMed study.
2010
An important focus in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research is the development of methods for early diagnosis. Despite progress with some other biomarkers, sensitive and specific neuropsychological measures for identifying subjects in the prodromal phase of AD remain the most promising early diagnostic tool. We evaluated the value of the composite score for the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease Neuropsychological Battery (CERAD-NB) in Europeans with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and in control populations. Baseline clinical data were analyzed from 223 healthy elderly and 224 subjects with MCI from the prospective AddNeuroMed study carried out in Finland, France, Greec…
Relationship between transforming growth factor beta1 and progression of hypertensive renal disease.
2002
In this study the role of circulating transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) on progression of renal hypertensive disease has been investigated. Fifty consecutive outpatients with essential hypertension were enrolled and divided into three groups, according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group A comprised 10 hypertensives with UAEor=20 mg/24 h (normoalbuminuric group); Group B included 21 hypertensives with UAE20300 mg/24 h (microalbuminuric group); Group C encompassed 19 hypertensives with UAEor= 300 mg/24 h (proteinuric group). In all patients UAE by immunonephelometric assay, circulating TGFbeta1 by a solid phase specific sandwich ELISA technique, BUN and creatinine by ro…
Role of dopamine neurotransmission in the long-term effects of repeated social defeat on the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine
2016
Numerous studies report that social defeat stress alters dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in several areas of the brain. Alterations of the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway are believed to be responsible for the increased vulnerability to drug use observed as a result of social stress. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of DA receptors on the long-term effect of repeated social defeat (RSD) on the conditioned rewarding and reinstating effects of cocaine. For this purpose, the D1R antagonist SCH 23390 and the D1R antagonist raclopride were administered 30 min before each social defeat and a cocaine-induced CPP procedure was initiated three weeks later. The expression of the D1R a…
Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and hyperhomocysteinemia in patients with acute myocardial infarction
2006
We sought to investigate the association between increased levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, and total plasma homocysteinemia (tHcy) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).In 138 patients hospitalized for AMI24 h on admission, serum levels of ADMA, its symmetric stereoisomer (SDMA) and tHcy were measured.ADMA was positively associated with SDMA (p0.001) and tHcy (p=0.03) but not with estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR, p=0.96), while tHcy strongly correlated with eGFR (p=0.002) and SDMA (p0.001). By multiple linear regression, SDMA but not ADMA was independently associated with tHcy (p=0.005).Our findings sugges…
Cerebral embolic ischemia in rats: correlation of stroke severity and functional deficit as important outcome parameter.
2006
The embolic MCA occlusion model in rats is used for recanalisation studies in acute stroke. In addition to the determination of lesion size, the assessment of functional outcome may improve the value of this model. Male Wistar rats were submitted to MCA clot embolism or sham surgery. In order to achieve a larger variety of lesion volume, 2 subgroups (each 7 animals) were subjected to differently sized emboli (30 and 40 mm). Follow-up period was 6 days. Outcome assessment consisted of a test battery including parallel bar crossing, observation of behaviour in an open field and an 8-arm maze and a neurological score with ten different sensorimotor and coordinative items. Animals were perfusio…
A randomized, intraindividual, non-inferiority, Phase III study comparing daylight photodynamic therapy with BF-200 ALA gel and MAL cream for the tre…
2018
Abstract Background The most effective treatment modality for actinic keratosis (AK) is photodynamic therapy (PDT). Major obstacles of PDT are the need of a special illumination device and pain accompanying the illumination. These issues may be overcome by replacing an artificial high‐power light source with natural daylight for more extended illumination at lower light doses. Objective To determine whether BF‐200 ALA (a nanoemulsion gel containing 7.8% 5‐aminolaevulinic acid) is non‐inferior to MAL (a cream containing 16% methyl‐aminolaevulinate) in the treatment of mild‐to‐moderate AK with daylight PDT (dPDT). Non‐inferiority of the primary efficacy variable (total lesion clearance rate p…

Strength athletes are capable to produce greater muscle activation and neural fatigue during high-intensity resistance exercise than nonathletes.
2009
Acute neuromuscular responses to maximum versus forced repetition (FR) knee extension resistance exercises (4 sets of 12 repetitions [reps] with a 2-minute recovery between the sets) were examined in 4 male strength athletes (SAs) and 4 nonathletes. Maximum repetition (MR) sets were performed to voluntary exhaustion (12 repetition maximum [RM]), whereas in the FR sets, the load was greater (8RM) and the set was continued after voluntary fatigue with 4 additional assisted reps. Maximal isometric force and electromyogram (EMG) activity of the knee extensors were measured before and after the exercise, as well as 2 recovery days after the exercise. Electromyogram activity was also measured dur…
Acute myeloid leukemia in Italian patients with multiple sclerosis treated with mitoxantrone
2011
none 25 no Abstract OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence and dose-dependency of mitoxantrone (MTX)-associated acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) in the network of Italian multiple sclerosis (MS) clinics. METHODS: We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients treated with MTX in MS centers under the Italian national health care system between 1998 and 2008. Demographic, disease, treatment, and follow-up information were collected using hospital records. RESULTS: Data were available for 3,220 patients (63% women) from 40 Italian centers. Follow-up (mean ± SD) was 49 ± 29 months (range 12-140 months). We observed 30 cases of AML (incidence 0.93% [95% confidence interval 0.60%…
Pain and discomfort during orthodontic treatment: causative factors and effects on compliance.
1998
Orthodontic patients experience pain and discomfort to a varying degree during the course of treatment. The aims of the present investigation were to follow the progress of adaptation after insertion of new appliances and to study the relationships between the type of appliance worn and pain or discomfort experienced, between pain sensations and attitude toward the treatment and their effects on patients' compliance. Pain and discomfort experienced by 84 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, their attitude toward the treatment, and compliance were assessed 7 days, 14 days, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after appliance insertion, using specially designed protocols, questionnaires, and…
