Ricci-flow based conformal mapping of the proximal femur to identify exercise loading effects.

2018

AbstractThe causal relationship between habitual loading and adaptive response in bone morphology is commonly explored by analysing the spatial distribution of mechanically relevant features. In this study, 3D distribution of features in the proximal femur of 91 female athletes (5 exercise loading groups representing habitual loading) is contrasted with 20 controls. A femur specific Ricci-flow based conformal mapping procedure was developed for establishing correspondence among the periosteal surfaces. The procedure leverages the invariance of the conformal mapping method to isometric shape differences to align surfaces in the 2D parametric domain, to produce dense correspondences across an…

Parametric Design of Sailing Hull Shapes

2006

The author presents an original algorithm aimed at automatically generating the hull shape of a sailing yacht starting from an initial set of parameters. The procedure consists of two steps. First one keel line and a Designed Water Line (DWL in the following) are faired according to a set of parameters, say length of water line, canoe body draft, stem angle and some adimensional coefficients. This information is then used to fair the hull surface, which must in turn fulfil more prerequisites (parameters like displaty cement, floatation area and related coefficients). The hull is defined by means of a B-spline surface, the fairing of which is ensured by allowing for all the imposed objective…

INITIAL PARAMETRIC REPRESENTATION OF BLOBS

2009

Blobs, developed by J.F. Blinn in 1982, are the implicit surfaces obtained by composition of a real numerical function and a distance function. Since, many authors (C. Murakami, H. Nishimura, G. Wyvill…) defined their own function of density, from these implicit surfaces are interesting from several points of view. In particular, their fusion makes it possible to easily obtain an implicit equation of resulting surface. However, these surfaces do not admit a parametric equation yet. In this article, we will establish the parametric equation of two blobs in fusion, defined by the function of density of C. Murakami, by using an algebraic method. Then, we will develop another method, based on …

Boolean operations with implicit and parametric representation of primitives using R-functions

2005

We present a new and efficient algorithm to accurately polygonize an implicit surface generated by multiple Boolean operations with globally deformed primitives. Our algorithm is special in the sense that it can be applied to objects with both an implicit and a parametric representation, such as superquadrics, supershapes, and Dupin cyclides. The input is a constructive solid geometry tree (CSG tree) that contains the Boolean operations, the parameters of the primitives, and the global deformations. At each node of the CSG tree, the implicit formulations of the subtrees are used to quickly determine the parts to be transmitted to the parent node, while the primitives' parametric definition …

Semiparametric Models with Functional Responses in a Model Assisted Survey Sampling Setting : Model Assisted Estimation of Electricity Consumption Cu…

2010

This work adopts a survey sampling point of view to estimate the mean curve of large databases of functional data. When storage capacities are limited, selecting, with survey techniques a small fraction of the observations is an interesting alternative to signal compression techniques. We propose here to take account of real or multivariate auxiliary information available at a low cost for the whole population, with semiparametric model assisted approaches, in order to improve the accuracy of Horvitz-Thompson estimators of the mean curve. We first estimate the functional principal components with a design based point of view in order to reduce the dimension of the signals and then propose s…

Robust fault detection design for unknown inputs Takagi-Sugeno models with parametric uncertainties and time-varying delays

2014

This paper deals with the design of robust fault detection system for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) modes with parametric uncertainties and time-varying delay. An Unknown Input Observer (UIO) is designed such that the unknown inputs are thoroughly decoupled from residual signals while they show the maximum possible sensitivity to the faults and the minimum possible sensitivity to the external disturbances. Since the system under consideration is subjected to parametric uncertainties, the H ∞ model matching approach is used to design an optimal observer. Design procedure is given in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of the p…

In-Vitro Investigation of Fatigue and Fracture Behavior of Transmucosal versus Submerged Bone Level Implants Used in Fixed Prosthesis

2021

Background: The present in vitro study aimed to investigate the fatigue performance of different dental fixtures in two different emergence profiles. Biological failures are frequently reported because the problem canonly be solved by replacing a failing implant with a new one. Clinicians addressed minor mechanical failures, such as bending, loosening or the fracture of screws, abutment, or the entire prosthesis, by simply replacing or fixing them. Methods: Transmucosal and submerged bone-level dental implants underwent fatigue strength tests (statical and dynamical performance) by a standardized test: UNI EN ISO 14801:2016. Two types of emergence profiles (Premium sub-crestal straight impl…

ETAS Space–Time Modeling of Chile Triggered Seismicity Using Covariates: Some Preliminary Results

2021

Chilean seismic activity is one of the strongest in the world. As already shown in previous papers, seismic activity can be usefully described by a space–time branching process, such as the ETAS (Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequences) model, which is a semiparametric model with a large time-scale component for the background seismicity and a small time-scale component for the triggered seismicity. The use of covariates can improve the description of triggered seismicity in the ETAS model, so in this paper, we study the Chilean seismicity separately for the North and South area, using some GPS-related data observed together with ordinary catalog data. Our results show evidence that the use of s…

Multi-Dimensional motivic pattern extraction founded on adaptive redundancy filtering

2005

Abstract We present a computational model for discovering repeated patterns in symbolic representations of monodic music. Patterns are discovered through an incremental adaptive identification along a multi-dimensional parametric space. The difficulties of pattern discovery mainly come from combinatorial redundancies, that our model is able to control efficiently. A specificity relation is defined between pattern descriptions, unifying suffix and inclusion relations and enabling a filtering of redundant descriptions. Combinatorial proliferation caused by successive repetitions of patterns is managed using cyclic patterns. The modelling of these redundancy control mechanisms enables an autom…
