Panama and the WTO: new constitutionalism of trade policy and global tax governance

Tax havens and tax flight have lately received increasing attention, while interest toward multilateral trade policies has somewhat diminished. We argue that more attention needs to be paid exactly to the interrelations between trade and tax policies. Drawing from two case studies on Panama's trade disputes, we show how World Trade Organization (WTO) rules can be used both to resist attempts to sanction secrecy structures and to promote measures against tax flight. This article focuses on Foucault’s and Agamben’s readings of Augustine’s account of human nature and original sin. Foucault’s analysis of Augustine’s account of sexual acts in paradise, subordinated to will and devoid of lust, highlights the way it constitutes the model for the married couple, whose sexual acts are only acceptable if diverted by the will away from desire and towards the tasks of procreation. Building a Paradise? : On the Quest for the Optimal Human Habitat

Do humans have a natural habitat? If yes, is it the original habitat of early hominids or the most optimal environment for today’s humans? Are these two the same thing and, if not, what does ‘optimal habitat’ mean? I examine the concept of the optimal habitat from four viewpoints: 1) paradise; 2) urban design based on environmental psychology; 3) favorite places; and 4) environment as an invitation for action. I conclude that an optimal habitat is not a collection of more or less fixed elements but an environment that can be experienced as a beneficial feedback loop based on and responding to cognitive, emotional, aesthetic, and other needs. Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielmassani tarkistan helsinkiläisen taiteilijan Ninni Heldtin Kylpijät kuvasarja. Kuvasarja edustaa Ninni Heldtin eräänlaista ihmistä, naiseksi ja taiteilijaksi kasvun prosessia, joka taiteilija on kokenut itämaisen sahaja joogan ja filosofian harrastuksien kautta ja jotka hän on tuonut näkyviin Kylpijät-nimisessä kuvasarjassa henkisen puhdistumisen ja valaistumisen ideoiden kautta. Ideaa henkisestä puhdistumisesta ja kylpemisestä taiteilija alkoi työstää vuodesta 2010 lähtien. Tällä hetkellä Kylpijä-nimistä teosta on 15 kappaletta.
