Prominence and centralization: a two-way contrast between lexical and epenthetic non-labial high vowels in Algherese Catalan

Algherese Catalan has the peculiarity of presenting an inserted [i] vowel across words in order to avoid certain consonant codas. In this study, we compare five acoustic features of this epenthetic segment (i.e., duration, intensity, and the three first formants) with those of lexical /i/ vowels, both stressed and unstressed. The results indicate that the three vowels present differences only with respect to duration, F2 and, to a lesser extent, F3. The second formant values decline progressively from the lexical stressed vowels to the inserted unstressed segments, with lexical unstressed segments at an intermediate point. In this article the results of a quantitative and qualitative research into person deixis are shown and, generally, the ones related to the participative inscription, within the oral academic genre of the master class. In order to do so, this discursive genre has been contrasted with colloquial oral conversation and academic prose. The quantitative results include the distribution of the references to the enunciator and to the enunciatary in the three genres (the individual ones, the collective ones and those that allow the participants to avoid direct reference). With the use of newspapers, manuscripts, letters and speeches, the article analyses the admission of Sicilian Catholic deputies in the first national Parliament, like Emerico Amari, Vito d’Ondes Reggio and Gregorio Ugdulena. It underlines their political programs, beliefs and the idea of political representation as an action that was in the best interest of the represented people. In the background there was a steady claim to Legazia Apostolica that could have continued to exist only in a system of regional autonomy.
