Abstract Study aim: Developments have recently been made in bariatric surgery outside the USA. The aim of this retrospective non-randomized study was to report on our experience regarding biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) and non-adjustable gastric banding (GB) in a population of 235 obese patients. Patients and methods: From March 1990 to March 1998, 235 obese patients were operated on, 142 by BDP and 93 by GB, via laparotomy after rigourous selection of the patient population. Results: The mean duration of surgery was 2 h 50 minutes for BPD and 1 h for GB. One postoperative death occurred due to massive pulmonary embolism. Background/Goals: Diagnostic laparoscopy under sedoanalgesia is a valuable tool in the work-up of liver diseases and is helpful as a staging procedure. The rate of bacteremia caused by this procedure is unknown, in particular when performed as minilaparoscopy. Study: A 100 consecutive patients having undergone diagnostic laparoscopy carried out either conventionally (group I, n = 50) or as minilaparoscopy (group II, n - 50) were prospectively enrolled in this study. In this prospective study, 82 patients (40 males, 42 females, aged between 15 and 80 years) with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV) were treated with different positioning manoeuvres using video-oculographic control. The maximum age for females and males was 31 and 40 years respectively. After an interview about the special history related to vertigo imbalance symptoms and using video-oculographic control, we diagnosed 79 patients with BPPV of the posterior semicircular canal and 3 of the horizontal semicircular canal.
