Reactivación participativa del espacio público. Estudios de caso en Valencia y Madrid

2017

[EN] This work aims to understand the phenomenon of what we have propose to call "participatory reactivation of public space", which is characterized by the direct participation of citizens in the creation and management of social and cultural activities in public spaces, as part of a general will to reclaim that space as truly "public", where the citizens have power in the decision-making processes. This movement has been reinforced by the establishment of professional collectives and initiatives from public institutions. Seven case studies of organizations from Valencia and Madridwere conducted, in the form of semi-structured in-depth interviews,in order to define the shared characteristi…

The effect of non-participation on the estimation of smoking trends

2015

Background Smoking trends in Finland have been declining among men and increasing among women. These trends are based on data collected through population surveys. At the same time, survey participation rates have declined. Planning Research ‘with’ Minorities in Palermo: Negotiating Ethics and Commitments in a Participatory Process

2008

The paper will explore some ethical issues which arise when undertaking research with minorities (ethnic groups, children, poor people) in the context of an uncollaborative planning process, like the Palermo Local Agenda 21. There are important ethical issues that have to be carefully considered when undertaking research with people, particularly when these people are marginalised or excluded by wider society. Here, issues of powerlessness and vulnerability abound. If this is accepted, some questions arise. How are we supposed to consider planning researchers – understood as immersed in the policy process – as moral/political agents, given their political commitments? Here there are both ge…

Ethical E-Participation

2015

The most recent forms of e-participation seem to provide new issues that need to be discussed. One such discussion involves the role of GIS. Can an ethically aware GIS be conceived? What does it mean for a GIS to be ethical at all? Throughout this paper, first the authors create a theoretical framework to encompass four key elements that lead us to the definition of ethical digital mapping: GIS ethics, social justice, power, and participation. Then they introduce the concept of PPGIS (Public Participation GIS), and argue that only a ‘qualitative turn' can enhance their importance in decision-making processes. Finally, the authors discuss an experiment that is currently taking place in Paler…

Barriers to Sport Participation Faced by Ethiopian and Eritrean Migrant Women in Switzerland

2021

Global migration (both forced and voluntary) has intensified the interaction between existing and emerging cultures. Sport has gained recognition as an effective tool for enhancing migrants’ overall wellbeing, active participation, and social integration. However, a growing number of studies have shown that migrant women have the lowest rate of sport participation, especially in organized clubs. These findings have brought the accessibility and inclusion of existing sport structure and culture in host countries into question. Using the six-factor model of constraints by Tsai and Coleman (1999), this study explored the barriers that hinder Ethiopian and Eritrea migrant women (EEMW) from part…

The Committee of the Regions: A Springboard for the Citizens

2013

Abstract This study focuses on the relation between the Committee of the Regions (CoR), an advisory institution of the European Union defined as the political assembly of holders of a regional or local electoral mandate serving the cause of European integration, and the democratic deficit, understood as the effective ways of citizens’ participation in the institutional decision making. The work hypothesis is that the CoR, in spite of being mostly unknown to citizens, could be an effective tool for tackling the democratic deficit. Through qualitative interviews and surveys at different levels, the article analyzes the current situation and the potential opportunities of the CoR in its relati…
