Nucleon Structure Functions in a Constituent Quark Scenario

1999

Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the polarized part on distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized as well as in the polarized case, though a good description of the recent polarized neutron data requires the introduction of one more paramater. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present scheme is impressive. We conclude that DIS data are consistent with a low energy scenario dominat…

Search for heavy resonances decaying to a photon and a hadronically decaying Z/W/H boson in pp collisions at s=13  TeV with the ATLAS detector

2018

This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at √ s = 13     TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139     fb − 1 . The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson ( H → b ¯ b ) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-s…

Generalized Parton Distributions in the valence region from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

2013

This work reviews the recent developments in the field of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) and Deeply virtual Compton scattering in the valence region, which aim at extracting the quark structure of the nucleon. We discuss the constraints which the present generation of measurements provide on GPDs, and examine several state-of-the-art parametrizations of GPDs. Future directions in this active field are discussed.

Measurement of the correlation between the polar angles of leptons from top quark decays in the helicity basis ats=7  TeVusing the ATLAS detector

2016

A measurement of the correlations between the polar angles of leptons from the decay of pair-produced t and (t) over bar quarks in the helicity basis is reported, using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV collected during 2011. Candidate events are selected in the dilepton topology with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. The angles theta(1) and theta(2) between the charged leptons and the direction of motion of the parent quarks in the t (t) over bar rest frame are sensitive to the spin information, and the distribution of …

The Influence of Flow on the Jet Quenching Power in Heavy-Ion Collisions

2005

The flow pattern and evolution of the medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions can have significant influence on the energy loss of hard partons traversing the medium. We demonstrate that within a range of assumptions for longitudinal and transverse flow which are all compatible with the measured hadronic single particle distributions, the quenching power of the medium can vary within almost a factor five. Thus, the choice of the medium evolution is one of the biggest uncertainties in jet quenching calculations and needs to be addressed with some care.

Two-particle differential transverse momentum and number density correlations in p−Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV at the …

2019

The production cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in pp collisions at √s = 2.76 TeV, 5.02 TeV, 7 TeV and 13 TeV, as well as for Pb-Pb collision at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV and Xe-Xe at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV in ALICE at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the transverse momentum region of 0.15 results show a faster-than-linear increase with the center-of-mass energy and follow a similar trend with respect to previous measurements. The analysis of the p_T spectra in multiplicity intervals show a weak center-of-mass energy dependence when they are compared to their respective inelastic (INEL) pp measurement. The average multiplicity as a function of…

Scaling violation in the infinite-momentum frame

1978

The theory of scaling violation is studied in asymptotically free gauge theories formulated in the infinite-momentum frame. The transition probabilities occurring in the equation governing the q/sup 2/ dependence of the parton distributions are calculated directly. The equivalence of this formalism for the longitudinal parton distributions with the usual one based on the operator-product expansion is demonstrated. The assets of our method are calculational simplicity and reference to physical intuition.

Energy deposition in hard dihadron triggered events in heavy-ion collisions

2008

The experimental observation of hadrons correlated back-to-back with a (semi-)hard trigger in heavy ion collisions has revealed a splitting of the away side correlation structure in a low to intermediate transverse momentum (P_T) regime. This is consistent with the assumption that energy deposited by the away side parton into the bulk medium produced in the collision excites a sonic shockwave (a Mach cone) which leads to away side correlation strength at large angles. A prediction following from assuming such a hydrodynamical origin of the correlation structure is that there is a sizeable elongation of the shockwave in rapidity due to the longitudinal expansion of the bulk medium. Using a s…

Measurement of top quark pair differential cross sections in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at s=7 and 8 TeV with ATLAS

2016

Measurements of normalized differential cross-sections of top quark pair ($t\bar t$) production are presented as a function of the mass, the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the $t\bar t$ system in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$ at 7 TeV and 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ at 8 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with top quark pair signatures are selected in the dilepton final state, requiring exactly two charged leptons and at least two jets with at least one of the jets identified as likely to contain a $b$-hadron. The measured distributi…

Confronting the impact parameter dependent JIMWLK evolution with HERA data

2018

The small-$x$ evolution of protons is determined from numerical solutions of the JIMWLK equations, starting from an initial condition at moderate $x$ for a finite size proton. The resulting dipole amplitude is used to calculate the total reduced cross section $\sigma_r$ and charm reduced cross section $\sigma_{rc}$, as well as diffractive vector meson production. We compare results to experimental data from HERA and discuss fundamental problems arising from the regime sensitive to non-perturbative physics. We emphasize that information on the gluonic content of the proton, gluon spatial distributions and correlations over wide ranges in $x$, which can in principle be constrained by our stud…
