Stochastic fracture analysis of systems with moving material

2015

This paper considers the probability of fracture in a system in which a material travels supported by rollers. The moving material is subjected to longitudinal tension for which deterministic and stochastic models are studied. In the stochastic model, the tension is described by a multi-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The material is assumed to have initial cracks perpendicular to the travelling direction, and a stochastic counting process describes the occurrence of cracks in the longitudinal direction of the material. The material is modelled as isotropic and elastic, and LEFM is applied. For a general counting process, when there is no fluctuation in tension, the reliability of t…

Evidence for Positive Selection in the Capsid Protein-Coding Region of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) Subjected to Experimental Passage Regi…

2001

We present sequence data from two genomic regions of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) subjected to several experimental passage regimens. Maximum-likelihood estimates of the nonsynonymous-to-synonymous rate ratio parameter (dN/dS) suggested the action of positive selection on some antigenic sites of the FMDV capsid during some experimental passages. These antigenic sites showed an accumulation of convergent amino acid replacements during massive serial cytolytic passages and also in persistent infections of FMDV in cell culture. This accumulation was most significant at the antigenic site A (the G-H loop of capsid VP1), which includes an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) cellular recognition motif. Our …

L'art beauvoirien de (re)vivre la mutilation sous le diktat de l'Histoire et du temps

2022

Simone de Beauvoir’s texts show the acute presence of history in the writer’s life, and the futility of individual human actions, a sense of meaningless life, which contrasts with the author’s optimistic vision of the world. For this reason, the human being feels lost and crippled, especially a woman for whom the reality of war means alienation, anxiety, inability to fulfill the dream of unity with another person. This approach allows the author, who is an existentialist, to pay special attention to gender antagonism and social roles assigned to the eternally (dominant) man and (subordinate) woman. Beauvoir’s writing becomes the cry of an individual forced to face his own helplessness, fail…

Quantum Information by Adiabatic Passage : Quantum Gates and Decoherence

2007

The first part of this thesis is about adiabatic quantum processes designed for the implementation of quantum logic gates, the elementary components of quantumcomputers, by the interaction of pulsed laser fields with atoms. The adiabaticmethods allow robust processes, i.e. which are not sensitive to the fluctuationsof experimental parameters. The processes described in this thesis only requireaccurate control of the polarisations and the relative static phases of thelaser fields. These processes allow the implementation of a universal set ofquantum gates, which make possible the implementation of all the other quantumgates by combinations. The second part of this thesis concerns the effects …

Rikoksista tuomitut naiset : yhteisöstä erottaminen ja takaisinliittymisen mahdollisuudet

2019

Tutkimus käsittelee yhteisöstä erottamisen ja siihen takaisinliittymisen mahdollisuuksia rikostaustaisten naisten elämässä. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat rikostaustaisten naisten kertomukset elämänkulustaan. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan naisten kertomuksia siirtymäriittiteorian eli yhteisöstä erottamisen, liminaalin ja takaisinliittämisen näkökulmasta. Aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla 18 naista, jotka haastatteluhetkellä olivat joko suorittamassa vankeusrangaistustaan, ehdonalaisen vapauden valvonnassa tai rangaistuksensa suorittaneet. Aineiston analyysissa on käytetty narratiivista lähestymistapaa sekä Greimasin aktanttimallia. Aineiston analyysissa esiin nousevia keskeisiä teemoja ovat päih…

"Antavat anteeksi ovenvieret" : Matjoi Plattosen kuolinriittikuvaukset siirtymäriittiteorian valossa

2019

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suistamolaiselta itkijältä Matjoi Plattoselta vuosina 1908−1920 tallennettuja kuolinrituaalien kuvauksia ja niihin liittyviä itkuvirsiä siirtymäriittiteorian avulla. Tutkimuksen aineiston Plattosen kanssa ovat tuottaneet Matti Kaisla, U. T. Sirelius ja A. O. Väisänen. Tutkimuksessa kiinnitetään huomiota erityisesti rituaalisen itkemisen merkitykseen kuolinrituaalien osana.

Ars moriendi w "Baśniach" Hansa Christiana Andersena

2016

The author focuses on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales which, in her opinion, became a cultural phenomenon because of ending the civilisation of archetypes, metaphysical and existential truths dating back to the „kindergarten of mankind”. The centre of the article is the motif of death. almost omnipresent in the Danish writer’s works. Death will not spare anyone - this is the thesis argued by the author based on analysis of selected fairy tales by Andersen.

A Time-Non-Homogeneous Double-Ended Queue with Failures and Repairs and Its Continuous Approximation

2018

We consider a time-non-homogeneous double-ended queue subject to catastrophes and repairs. The catastrophes occur according to a non-homogeneous Poisson process and lead the system into a state of failure. Instantaneously, the system is put under repair, such that repair time is governed by a time-varying intensity function. We analyze the transient and the asymptotic behavior of the queueing system. Moreover, we derive a heavy-traffic approximation that allows approximating the state of the systems by a time-non-homogeneous Wiener process subject to jumps to a spurious state (due to catastrophes) and random returns to the zero state (due to repairs). Special attention is devoted to the cas…
