Uptake rates of several PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs were measured for semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) under controlled conditions in bulk water and sediment. The study was performed at 19 degrees C and 11 degrees C, and water and sediment concentrations were measured during the exposure. Linear uptake rates for specific PCDD/Fs and PCBs in 19 degrees C water varied from 34 to 111 l/m2 day and in 11 degrees C water from 8.8 to 96 l/m2 day for the whole SPMD. Uptake rates at 19 degrees C sediment ranged from 9.0 to 80 mgOC/m2 day and in 11 degrees C sediment, from 3.0 to 31, mgOC/m2 day. In this work, we compare the operation of a passively modelocked polarization-maintaining emission in two thulium-doped fiber lasers pumped at 1561 nm, with emission at wavelengths of 1.951 μm in one case and 2.07 μm in the other. We obtained a sequence of light pulses at 15.6 MHz, whose temporal width was 81 ps at 1.95 μm, and a sequence of light pulses at 13.1 MHz, whose temporal width was 94 ps at 2.07 μm. Finally, we also measured the long-term stability of this setup during a 24-h operation, as well as the short-term stability in a simulated harsh environment. The results confirm the superior performance of fiber laser systems with a fully polarization-maintaining design.
Passive sampling of PAHs in indoor air in Nepal

PAHs were sampled in ten homes in the Makwanpur region, Nepal. SPMDs and moss bags (Sphagnum girgensohnii) were used as passive samplers. Soot particles on the SPMD surfaces were also analyzed for PAHs. The overall PAH concentrations in SPMDs were significantly higher than those in moss bags. Total PAH mean concentrations of ten houses were 535μg/g lipid for SPMDs and 7.2 μg/g moss (dw) for moss bags. Ratios of phenanthrene/anthracene in indoor SPMDs and particulate matter varied from 2.9 to 3.5 and ratios of fluoranthene/pyrene varied from 1.1 to 1.4. Increased concern for the environment has increased the number of investment opportunities in mutual funds specialized in promoting responsible environmental attitudes. This article examines the performance and risk sensitivities of US green mutual funds vis-a-vis their conventional peers. We also analyze and compare this performance relative to other socially responsible investing (SRI) mutual funds. Abstract Large volumes of ∼880–1100 Ma calc-alkaline granitoid rocks in the Wanni and Vijayan crustal provinces of Sri Lanka make it likely that these domains were produced in active margin settings, probably Grenville-age magmatic arcs. We report new single zircon evaporation ages and Nd isotopic systematics for dioritic to granodioritic gneisses of the Kadugannawa Complex of central Sri Lanka which record a period of magmatic arc activity between 1006 and 881 Ma and show this complex to be part of the Wanni domain. Mitigation of structural damage due to earthquake ground motion may be performed by inserting dampers in the structure. In order to enhance the damping effect various toggle brace configurations have been recently proposed. In this paper these equipments are analyzed in detail and compared with a new one here proposed. The analysis is performed by taking into account the inherent nonlinearities of the damper by means of stochastic analysis and validated by using time histories of recorder accelerograms and by the stochastic analysis using spectrum consistent power spectral density.

La 3,4-metilendioximetanfetamina (MDMA), una sustancia popularmente conocida como éxtasis, es una droga ilícita consumida habitualmente por adolescentes y adultos jóvenes. Además, el policonsumo es una práctica habitual entre los usuarios de la MDMA, siendo la cocaína una de las drogas más frecuentemente asociadas a esta sustancia. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar los efectos a corto y largo plazo que se producen tras la administración de la MDMA (5, 10, o 20 mg/kg) sola o en combinación con cocaína (25 mg/kg) en ratones adolescentes.
