The Impact of Candle Burning During All Saints’ Day Ceremonies on Ambient Alkyl-Substituted Benzene Concentrations
2013
Research findings concerning benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene, meta-, para- and ortho-xylene as well as styrene (BTEXS) emission at public cemeteries during All Saints’ Day are presented here. Tests were carried out at town-located cemeteries in Opole and Grodków (southern Poland) and, as a benchmark, at the centres of those same towns. The purpose of the study was to estimate BTEXS emissions caused by the candle burning and, equally important to examine, whether emissions generated by the tested sources were similar to the BTEXS emissions generated by road transport. During the festive period, significant increases in benzene concentrations, by 200 % and 144 %, were noted at the cemeteries …
Analysis and Improving Methods of Efficiency of Solar Energy in Municipal Heating System
2011
This paper introduces the current state of solar heating system among Wanzleben city heating net. In view of low efficiency (only 20-30%) of this system, it analyses the shortcomings of this applied system from sensors' situation, fixed flow problem, the influence of the user's water temperature and the length of pipe separately. Some improving methods which are effective by theoretical analysis are suggested. The implementation steps have to be discussed in more detail with the utility.
Synthesis, size control, and passivation of CdS nanoparticles in water/AOT/n-heptane microemulsions
2003
Abstract CdS nanoparticles have been synthesised by adding tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphide to water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate/ n -heptane microemulsions containing CdSO 4 . Analysis of UV–Vis absorption spectra recorded at various times indicates that an initial rapid formation of CdS nanoparticles is followed by a very slow growth process which can be well described by a power law. The growth process is totally inhibited by the addition of an appropriate amount of bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEA) leading to the formation of stable nanosized CdS particles coated by an oriented monolayer of chemically bonded BEA molecules. Depending on the BEA addition time, the growth inhibit…
In-situ annealing characterization of atomic-layer-deposited Al2O3 in N2, H2 and vacuum atmospheres
2019
Tarkista embargo, kun artikkeli julkaistu. Atomic-layer-deposited Al 2 O 3 films can be used for passivation, protective, and functional purposes in electronic devices. However, as-deposited, amorphous alumina is susceptible to chemical attack and corrosion during manufacturing and field-use. On the contrary, crystalline Al 2 O 3 is resistant against aggressive chemical treatments and corrosion. Here, high-temperature treatments in N 2 , H 2 , and vacuum were used to crystallize alumina which exhibited different crystalline phases. The annealing process was monitored continuously in situ by measuring the film temperature and surface reflectance to understand the crystallization kinetics. Ex…
Analysis of a full-scale integral test in PERSEO facility by using TRACE code
2017
Over the last decades a lot of experimental researches have been done to increase the reliability of passive decay heat removal systems implementing in-pool immersed heat exchanger. In this framework, a domestic research program on innovative safety systems was carried out leading the design and the development of the PERSEO facility at the SIET laboratories. The configuration of the system consists of an heat exchanger contained in a small pool which is connected both at the bottom and at the top to a large water reservoir pool. Within the frame of a national research program funded by the Italian minister of economic development, the DEIM department of the University of Palermo in coopera…
Depth Enhancement by Fusion for Passive and Active Sensing
2012
This paper presents a general refinement procedure that enhances any given depth map obtained by passive or active sensing. Given a depth map, either estimated by triangulation methods or directly provided by the sensing system, and its corresponding 2-D image, we correct the depth values by separately treating regions with undesired effects such as empty holes, texture copying or edge blurring due to homogeneous regions, occlusions, and shadowing. In this work, we use recent depth enhancement filters intended for Time-of-Flight cameras, and adapt them to alternative depth sensing modalities, both active using an RGB-D camera and passive using a dense stereo camera. To that end, we propose …
COMBINED USE OF INNOVATIVE PASSIVE CONTROL DEVICES AND CONVENTIONAL BASE ISOLATION STRATEGIES
2021
This manuscript contains the main part of my research performed in the last three years at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo, at the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences (Unit of Applied Mechanics), University of Innsbruck, Austria and at the company FIP Mec, Selvazzano Dentro, Padova. Within the research framework of Structural Control, this dissertation proposes novel passive control strategies to mitigate the dynamic response of base isolated structural systems. Among the several types of devices proposed in literature, Tuned Mass Dampers and Tuned Liquid Column Dampers are undoubtedly the most widely employed vibration control devices for coupling with…

Modelling of a hydro-pneumatic system for heave compensation
2018
This paper presents a mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of a passive heave compensation system. The main purpose is to develop a model that enables cost-efficient prototyping and testing of the control system in an active heave compensator. The physics are described by first principles, and result in 21 ordinary differential equations. Temperature calculations are included as an option during simulation in order to investigate its effect on the results. Similarly is a non-ideal gas law (Redlich-Kwong equation) implemented and compared to the ideal gas law. Verification against field data shows that the model is in good accordance with real-life drilling operations. It is further s…
Automatic target recognition using 3D passive sensing and imaging with independent component analysis
2009
We present an overview of a method using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and 3D Integral Imaging (II) technique to recognize 3D objects at different orientations. This method has been successfully applied to the recognition and classification of 3D scenes.
