SISTEMI PASSIVI PER L’INDOOR COMFORT: LA GESTIONE DELLE SERRE SOLARI IN REGIME ESTIVO
2019
The dammuso: constructive characters of the traditional stone buildings of the isle of Pantelleria (Sicily)
2019
Pantelleria, a volcanic island between Tunisia and Sicily, is characterized by a highly windy territory constantly hit by the sun. This harsh environment forced the inhabitants to build in an extremely effective way against the natural elements. This paper investigates constructive technologies, local materials, and phases of construction of the traditional rural houses, the dammuso, a Sicilian word meaning “vaulted-building”. It is a traditional passive cooling building characterized by a cubical shape covered by a vaulted-roof. This typology can be found almost everywhere in the isle, both old and pretty new, as the only one permitted. The minimum configuration unit is a cube made of bear…
Bio-based Materials. Standardizzazione e processi per la commercializzazione
2021
Passive components for reducing environmental impacts of buildings:analysis of an experimental green roof
2020
The reduction of the environmental impacts related to the building sector is a matter of outmost importance concerning the sustainable utilization of resources related to human activities. Such sector is in fact responsible for about 40% of both release of pollutants in the atmosphere and energy consumption. When trying to reduce buildings’ environmental impacts, as well as to limit their energy consumption, building envelope passive systems can be used. Amongst these, green roofs have been gaining global attention due to their benefits in terms of resilience and sustainability, in order to mitigate the unfavourable urbanization effects. Research on the green roof has been indeed increasing…
Computer model and simulation of a traditional passive cooling ventilation system in a Modern building in Mazara del Vallo (Italy)
2008
Traditional and modern natural ventilation techniques have been integrated in a hybrid system for a retrofitting of public building in the city of Mazara del Vallo (Italy). The hybrid ventilation and air cooling system integrates a wind tower, an indirect evaporative heat exchanger, a ground cooling pipe network and ventilated façade. The first idea was to design a passive cooling system inspired to the typical wind towers of the Middle East, being the area very well ventilated. On the other hand, air humidity in summer is quite high and therefore the effectiveness of indirect evaporative cooling is quite low. For this reason, it was adopted a second passive cooling system consisting in a g…
A Chemical Approach to the Modelling of Band Gap of Passive Films for Corrosion Studies
2015
Photocurrent Spectroscopy (PCS) has gained a large consideration in the last decades as in situ technique for the characterization of semiconductors and photoconducting passive film/electrolyte junctions being able to provide information on the location of characteristic energy levels like: flat band potential (Ufb), internal photoemission threshold (Eth) and band gap value (Eg)
A Critical Assessment of Mott-Schottky Analysis for the Characterisation of Passive Film-Electrolyte Junctions

Photoelectrochemical and XPS Characterization of Passive films Grown on 316L Stainless Steel in High Temperature Water
2015
One of the major materials challenge for continued safe, reliable and cost-effective utilization of watercooled nuclear reactors for electricity production is development of improved understanding of the synergistic fundamental mechanisms responsible for corrosion and stress corrosion cracking degradation of austenitic steels and nickel base alloys
Characterization of Thin Passive Film-Electrolyte Junctions. The Amorphous Semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky Barrier Approach
2016
The knowledge of the solid-state properties of passive film is a preliminary task for a full understanding of the electron and ion transfer processes at the metal/oxide and oxide/electrolyte interface. Both processes are of paramount importance in determining the mechanism of film growth and dissolution as well as in determining the nature of the breakdown during the growth of anodic oxide films or the onset of generalized or localized corrosion process (1-2). With very few exceptions, it is a common belief, that most of anodic oxide films, grown on metals and alloys in aqueous solutions, display a semiconducting or insulating behaviour. It is also very well known that in many cases the ini…
