Relation of childhood brain tumors to exposure of parents and children to tobacco smoke: The Search international case-control study

2002

The etiology of childhood brain tumors (CBTs) remains unknown. Tobacco smoke contains several known carcinogens and can induce DNA adducts in human placenta and hemoglobin adducts in fetuses. We present the results of an international case-control study to evaluate the association between CBTs and exposure of parents and children to cigarette smoke. The study was undertaken as part of the SEARCH program of the IARC. Nine centers in 7 countries were involved. The studies mainly covered the 1980s and early 1990s. Cases (1,218, ages 0-19 years) were children newly diagnosed with a primary brain tumor; there were 2,223 population-based controls. Most mothers who agreed to participate were inter…

Estimation of volume fraction and gravimetric moisture of winter wheat based on microwave attenuation: a field scale study

2019

A considerable amount of water can be stored in vegetation, especially in regions experiencing large quantities of precipitation (mid-latitudes). In this context, an accurate estimate of the actual water status of the vegetation could lead to an improved understanding of the effect of plant water on the water budget. In this study, we developed and validated a novel approach to retrieve the vegetation volume fraction (δ) (i.e., volume percentage of solid plant material of a canopy in air) and the gravimetric vegetation water content (m g ) (i.e., amount of water per wet biomass) for winter wheat. The estimation was based on the attenuation of L-band microwave measurements through vegetation…

Kinetic modelling of passive transport and active efflux of a fluoroquinolone across Caco-2 cells using a compartmental approach in NONMEM.

2005

The purpose was to develop a general mathematical model for estimating passive permeability and efflux transport parameters from in vitro cell culture experiments. The procedure is applicable for linear and non-linear transport of drug with time,10 or10% of drug transport, negligible or relevant back flow, and would allow the adequate correction in the case of relevant mass balance problems. A compartmental kinetic approach was used and the transport barriers were described quantitatively in terms of apical and basolateral clearances. The method can be applied when sink conditions are not achieved and it allows the evaluation of the location of the transporter and its binding site. In this …

Preliminary results about the breath of passive smokers and vapers based on the use of portable air monitoring devices

2016

Abstract Preliminary studies were made on the effect of both, classical smoking and electronic cigarettes (ECs) vaping, based on the quality of the indoor air and the breath of passive smokers. Portable air monitoring devices were used to evaluate carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate materials (PM), formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air and breath of active and passive smokers and vapers. As preliminary results, it can be observed that the major part of PMs liberated in classical smoking and ECs vaping correspond to the lowest size, which is the most dangerous for human health. However, the number of smallest PMs formed during vaping is around 5…

Development of predictive retention-activity relationship models of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by micellar liquid chromatography: comparis…

2000

The predictive and interpretative capability of quantitative chromatographic retention-biological activity models is supported by the fact that under adequate experimental conditions the solute partitioning into chromatographic system can emulate the solute partitioning into lipid bilayers of biological membranes, which is the basis for drug and metabolite uptake, passive transport across membranes and bioaccumulation. The use of micellar solutions of Brij35 as mobile phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography has proven to be valid to predict some biological activities of different kinds of drugs. In this study, quantitative retention-activity relationship (QRAR) models to describe som…

Electronic properties and corrosion resistance of passive films on austenitic and duplex stainless steels

2018

Abstract Passive films were grown at constant potential in acidic (pH∼2) and alkaline (pH∼13) solutions on chromium, AISI 304L, AISI 316L and Duplex stainless steels. Passive films on chromium grow following a high field mechanism considering the presence of dissolution phenomena. According to the photoelectrochemical characterization, passive films on Cr have a bandgap of 3.4 eV when formed in acidic solution, and of 2.4 eV when formed in alkaline solution due to the formation of Cr(OH)3. These films result to be poorly stable against anodic dissolution due to a very anodic flat band potential. Conversely, impedance and photoelectrochemical measurements proved that passive films on stainle…

Il comfort indoor nel patrimonio edilizio esistente. Tecnologie e metodi per gli ambienti di vita

2022

This volume is the result of wide-scope research on the application of IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) in existing buildings. The examined items are the evaluation methods and standards related to the environmental parameters for the well-being levels required to guarantee suitable livability in indoor environments. An analysis is provided on the state of the art of technological aspects in architecture for the achievement of salubrious and comfortable indoor spaces. The study is focused on passive systems for microclimatic control, with a re-proposition of the most ancient ones. Nowadays, when revisited, they have proven to be effective solutions, especially due to their possibility to …
