Intestinal Microbiota and Susceptibility to Viral Infections

During pathogenesis, viruses come in contact with the microbiota that colonizes the mucosal sites they infect. The intestinal microbiota has emerged as a critical factor in intestinal viral susceptibility. While the interaction of virus-intestinal commensal bacteria can lead to enhanced or decreased viral infection capacity, several scientific studies support the use of probiotics as antiviral therapies. Thus, probiotics and the modulation of the intestinal microbiota are envisaged as therapeutic strategies in the prevention and treatment of viral infection.

Characterization of Colletotrichum strains associated with olive anthracnose in Sicily

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. is the most damaging olive fruit disease in many countries, including Italy. This disease has been sporadically detected in Sicily, but new agronomic practices can increase risk of olive anthracnose in this region. An etiological study of the disease focused on local olive cultivars growing at the International Olive Germplasm Collection (IOGC) in Villa Zagaria, Enna, Sicily has been undertaken. Ultramicro-trauma in the endometrial-myometrial junctional zone and pale cell migration in adenomyosis

Objective To determine if ultrastructural tissue trauma occurs in the junctional zone in uteri in adenomyosis. Design A case-control experimental study. Setting Endometriosis research center. Patient(s) Twelve uteri with adenomyosis, and 9 uteri without adenomyosis, were gained during laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy. IL-6 Regulates Neutrophil Microabscess Formation in IL-17A-Driven Psoriasiform Lesions

The lack of a generally accepted animal model for human psoriasis has hindered progress with respect to understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. Here we present a model in which transgenic IL-17A expression is targeted to the skin in mice, achievable after crossing our IL-17A(ind) allele to the K14-Cre strain. K14-IL-17A(ind/+) mice invariably develop an overt skin inflammation bearing many hallmark characteristics of human psoriasis including dermal infiltration of effector T cells, formation of neutrophil microabscesses, and hyperkeratosis. Hypoxia in Breast Cancer: Pathogenesis, Characterization and Biological/Therapeutic Implications

Nearly 50% of locally advanced breast cancers exhibit hypoxic and/or anoxic tissue areas that are heterogeneously distributed within the tumour mass. Hypoxia is predominantly caused by structural and functional abnormalities of the newly formed tumour vessels arising from neovascularization, by a disturbed microcirculation, by enlarged diffusion distances, and by tumour-associated or therapy-induced anaemia.
