In this work we carry out a study of pattern recognition to detect the microbiological activity in a group of heterogeneous compounds. The structural descriptors utilized are the topological connectivity indexes. The methods followed are stepwise linear discriminant analysis (linear analysis) and artificial neural network (nonlinear analysis). Although both methods are appropriate to differentiate between active and inactive compounds, the artificial neural network is, in this case, more adequate, since it shows in a test set a prediction success of 98%, versus 92% obtained with linear discriminant analysis.

Mutations in LMX1B cause abnormal skeletal patterning and renal dysplasia in nail patella syndrome

The LIM-homeodomain protein Lmxlb plays a central role in dorso-ventral patterning of the vertebrate limb1. Targeted disruption of Lmxlb results in skeletal defects including hypoplas-tic nails, absent patellae and a unique form of renal dysplasia (see accompanying manuscript by H. Chen et al.; ref. 2). These features are reminiscent of the dominantly inherited skeletal malformation nail patella syndrome (NFS). We show that LMX1B maps to the NFS locus and that three independent NFS patients carry de novo heterozygous mutations in this gene. In two eye-tracking experiments, we investigated the relationship between the subject preference in the resolution of subject-object ambiguities in German embedded clauses and semantic word order constraints (i.e., prominence hierarchies relating to the specificity/referentiality of noun phrases, case assignment and thematic role assignment). Our central research question concerned the timecourse with which prominence information is used and particularly whether it modulates the subject preference. X-RAY AND OPTICAL OBSERVATIONS OF A 0535+26

We present recent contemporaneous X-ray and optical observations of the Be/X-ray binary system A\,0535+26 with the \textit{Fermi}/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and several ground-based observatories. These new observations are put into the context of the rich historical data (since $\sim$1978) and discussed in terms of the neutron star Be-disk interaction. The Be circumstellar disk was exceptionally large just before the 2009 December giant outburst, which may explain the origin of the unusual recent X-ray activity of this source.
