A Fuzzy-Clustering Based Approach for Measuring Similarity Between Melodies

Symbolic melodic similarity aims to evaluate the degree of likeness of two or more sequences of notes. In this work, we propose the use of fuzzy c-means clustering as a tool for the measurement of the similarity between two melodies with a different number of notes. Moreover, we present an algorithm, FOCM, implemented in a computer program written in C\(\sharp \) able to read two melodies from files with MusicXML format and to perform the clustering to calculate the dissimilarity between any two melodies. A methodology for automated extraction of repeated patterns in discrete time series data is presented, dedicated to the discovery of musical motives in symbolic music representations. The basic principle of the approach consists in a search for closed patterns in a multi-dimensional parametric space, comprising various features related to melodic and rhythmic aspects, which can be organized into note-based and interval-based descriptions. Autocorrelation in meter induction: the role of accent structure.

The performance of autocorrelation-based meter induction was tested with two large collections of folk melodies, consisting of approximately 13 000 melodies for which the correct meters were available. The performance was measured by the proportion of melodies whose meter was correctly classified by a discriminant function. Furthermore, it was examined whether including different melodic accent types would improve the classification performance. Agency and Presence: A Common Dependence on Subjectivity?

This paper argues that presence, as shown in virtual environments, can usefully be seen as comprising various subtypes and that these in turn may have common conceptual and ontological features with a sense of agency as defined by Russell (1996, Agency: Its Role in Mental Development, Erlbaum.). Atomistic theory of mesoscopic pattern formation induced by bimolecular surface reactions between oppositely charged molecules

The kinetics of mesoscopic pattern formation is studied for a reversible A+B⇌0 reaction between mobile oppositely charged molecules at the interface. Using formalism of the joint correlation functions, non-equilibrium charge screening and reverse Monte Carlo methods, it is shown that labyrinth-like percolation structure induced by (even moderate-rate) reaction is principally non-steady-state one and is associated with permanently growing segregation of dissimilar reactants and aggregation of similar reactants into mesoscopic size domains. A role of short-range and long-range reactant interactions in pattern formation is discussed.

SREBPs binding sites are characterized by the presence of multiple target sequences as SRE, NFY and SP1, that can be arranged differently in different genes, so that it is not easy to identify the binding site on the basis of direct DNA sequence analysis. Although Bayesian density estimation using discrete mixtures has good performance in modest dimensions, there is a lack of statistical and computational scalability to high-dimensional multivariate cases. To combat the curse of dimensionality, it is necessary to assume the data are concentrated near a lower-dimensional subspace. In this study, 21 skull bones of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland were investigated histologically. Dermal bones show a diploë structure, with an ornamented external surface. The ridges consist of mostly well vascularized parallel-fibered bone; the valleys are built of an avascular layer of lamellar bone. The thick middle region consists of cancellous bone, with varying porosity. The thin and less vascularized internal cortex consists of parallel-fibered bone.
