Excitation spectra of solitary waves in scalar field models with polynomial self-interaction

2016

We study excitations of solitary waves -- the kinks -- in scalar models with degree eight polynomial self-interaction in (1+1) dimensions. We perform numerical studies of scattering of two kinks with an exponential asymptotic off each other and analyse the occurring resonance phenomena. We connect these phenomena to the energy exchange between the translational and the vibrational modes of the colliding kinks. We also point out that the interaction of two kinks with power-law asymptotic can lead to a long-range interaction between the two kinks.

Optical hysteresis in a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator

2007

International audience; High contrast optical bistability is found experimentally in the pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves. The data are in qualitative agreement with the results of calculation.

Emergent pattern formation of active magnetic suspensions in an external field

2020

We study collective self-organization of weakly magnetic active suspensions in a uniform external field by analyzing a mesoscopic continuum model that we have recently developed. Our model is based on a Smoluchowski equation for a particle probability density function in an alignment field coupled to a mean-field description of the flow arising from the activity and the alignment torque. Performing linear stability analysis of the Smoluchowski equation and the resulting orientational moment equations combined with non-linear 3D simulations, we provide a comprehensive picture of instability patterns as a function of strengths of activity and magnetic field. For sufficiently high activity and…

Analysis of photon-scanning tunneling microscope images of inhomogeneous samples: determination of the local refractive index of channel waveguides

1995

Channel waveguides are imaged by a photon-scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). The polarization of the light and its orientation with respect to the guide axis are shown to be very important parameters in the analysis of the images of such samples. We simulated image formation for the plane of incidence parallel to the axis of the guide. Our theoretical results are qualitatively in agreement with our measurements. These results show the ability of the PSTM to give information about the local refractive-index variations of a sample.

An experimental study of double-to-single-loop transition in stirred vessels

1999

The velocity characteristics of the flows in a fully baffled vessel of diameter T = 290 mm stirred by a Rushton impeller of diameter D = T/3 were investigated by means of laser-Doppler anemometry measurements. The effects of clearance and rotational speed on the flow patterns in the vessel were studied. It was found that at impeller clearances from the bottom of the vessel (C) around 0.2 T the characteristic double-loop flow pattern undergoes a transition to a single-loop one with the impeller stream direction becoming partly axial and being inclined at around 25 to 30° to the horizontal. The impeller stream inclination varied with radial distance from the impeller, as well as with angular …

Spatiotemporal Complexity in Step-Index Multimode Fibers

2016

We study supercontinuum generation in step-index fibers with a varying number of modes. We observe new spatiotemporal effects, including evidence of multimode spectral incoherent solitons, and a universal transition to spatiotemporal complexity.

Analog simulation of neural information propagation using an electrical FitzHugh-Nagumo lattice

2004

International audience; A nonlinear electrical lattice modelling neural information propagation is presented. It is shown that our system is an analog simulator of the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations, and hence supports pulse propagation with the appropriate properties.

Testing the stage-discharge relationship of a sharp crested sluice gate deduced by the momentum equation for a free-flow condition

2018

Abstract In this paper the stage-discharge relationship of a sharp crested sluice gate is deduced by applying the momentum equation for a free flow condition. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula was then calibrated using experimental flume data obtained in previous investigations carried out for a free-flow condition. The deduced stage–discharge relationship is characterized by a momentum coefficient which is empirically estimated by the ratio between the height of the orifice and the water depth in the section upstream the gate. The relative errors are always less than or equal to - 10% to +10% and 71.4% of the errors are less than or equal to ± 2%.

Soliton collisions with shape change by intensity redistribution in mixed coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations

2006

International audience; A different kind of shape changing (intensity redistribution) collision with potential application to signal amplification is identified in the integrable N-coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations with mixed signs of focusing- and defocusing-type nonlinearity coefficients. The corresponding soliton solutions for the N=2 case are obtained by using Hirota's bilinearization method. The distinguishing feature of the mixed sign CNLS equations is that the soliton solutions can both be singular and regular. Although the general soliton solution admits singularities we present parametric conditions for which nonsingular soliton propagation can occur. The multisoliton …

Resolution-enhanced optical coherence tomography based on classical intensity interferometry.

2009

We propose a fourth-order interference scheme for optical coherence tomography operating with broadband incoherent (or quasi-incoherent) light. It is shown that using this proposal, an axial resolution improvement by a factor of 2 and a better sensitivity for weakly reflecting samples are obtained than with the standard second-order correlation scheme. From a practical perspective, we suggest the use of broadband Q-switched pulses and performing ultrafast intensity correlation with a nonlinear crystal. The global performance of our proposal is illustrated by means of numerical simulations
