The dilemma for patients with chronic hepatitis C: treat now or warehouse?

2013

Dual therapy with peginterferon and ribavirin, the only treatent for chronic hepatitis C available In Italy and in many other ountries worldwide up to 2013, obtains satisfactory response ates in infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2, but far rom optimal for other genotypes [1,2]. Eradication requires 6–12 onths of therapy, with significant inconvenience for patients: dverse reactions force premature termination in about 20% of atients and reduced the quality of life for almost all who persist n treatment. In view of the important and prolonged side effects, nterferon-based treatment is perceived as a nightmare by many symptomatic,well-being, socially activepatients (the largema…

Clinical Efficacy of Laquinimod for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis; Pooled Analyses from the ALLEGRO and BRAVO Phase III Trials (S01.007)

2012

Objective: The current report provides detail on pooled analyses assessing the effect of laquinimod on relapse, disability, and brain atrophy measures from the recently completed phase III trials ALLEGRO and BRAVO. Background Laquinimod is an oral, CNS acting immunomodulator in development for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Its impact on disability progression and brain atrophy, two indices of longterm outcome for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are being studied in its phase III trials. Design/Methods: MS patients (N=2437) were randomized to laquinimod (n=984) or placebo (n = 1006). In both trials, patients underwent neurological examinations including the Expanded Disability S…

Outcomes of pneumatic dilation in achalasia: Extended follow-up of more than 25 years with a focus on manometric subtypes

2018

Background and aim Pneumatic dilation (PD) is the most popular nonsurgical treatment for achalasia. This study investigated predicting factors, including manometric subtypes for symptom recurrence in the long term, in patients with achalasia treated with a single PD. Methods Between 1983 and 2013, a total of 107 patients were treated initially with a single PD and included in this longitudinal cohort study. Outcomes were correlated with demographics, symptoms (Eckardt score), and esophagographic and manometric features. Manometric tracings were retrospectively classified according to the three subtypes of the Chicago classification. Results Ninety-one (85%) patients were successfully treate…

Practical recommendations for the application of DE 59/2013

2019

The changes introduced with Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom will require European Member States adapt their regulations, procedures and equipment to the new high standards of radiation safety. These new requirements will have an impact, in particular, on the radiology community (including medical physics experts) and on industry. Relevant changes include new definitions, a new dose limit for the eye lens, non-medical imaging exposures, procedures in asymptomatic individuals, the use and regular review of diagnostic reference levels (including interventional procedures), dosimetric information in imaging systems and its transfer to the examination report, new requirements on responsibiliti…

Liver Resection for Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma—Single-Center Experience with 286 Patients Undergoing Surgical Exploration over a Thirteen Year P…

2021

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) accounts for about 10% of primary liver cancer. Surgery is the only potentially curative treatment. We report on our current series of 229 consecutive hepatic resections for iCCA, which is one of the largest Western single-center series published so far. Methods: Between January 2008 to December 2020, a total of 286 patients underwent 307 surgical explorations for intended liver resection of iCCA at our department. Data were analyzed with regard to (1) preoperative treatment of tumor, (2) operative details, (3) perioperative morbidity and mortality, (4) histopathology, (5) outcome measured by tumor recurrence, treatment of recurrence and su…

Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in the European Union: A Systematic Review

2020

Abstract. Attitudes toward intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) are increasingly recognized as central to understanding of this major social and public health problem, and guide the development of more effective prevention efforts. However, to date this area of research is underdeveloped in western societies, and in particular in the EU. The present study aims to provide a systematic review of quantitative studies addressing attitudes toward IPVAW conducted in the EU. The review was conducted through Web of Science, PsychINFO, Medline, EMBASE, PUBMED, and the Cochrane Library, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) reco…

Rare dyslipidaemias, from phenotype to genotype to management: a European Atherosclerosis Society task force consensus statement

2020

Genome sequencing and gene-based therapies appear poised to advance the management of rare lipoprotein disorders and associated dyslipidaemias. However, in practice, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of these disorders are common, in large part due to interindividual variability in the genetic causes and phenotypic presentation of these conditions. To address these challenges, the European Atherosclerosis Society formed a task force to provide practical clinical guidance focusing on patients with extreme concentrations (either low or high) of plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The task force also recognises the scarcity of qua…

The European trauma course – trauma teaching goes European

2014

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified trauma as the major health care challenge of our century, claiming more productive life years worldwide than any other disease [1]. In the European Union (EU), injury accounts for 15 % of all deaths before the age of 60 years and is the fourth most common cause of death, with more than 235,000 deaths each year from injuries, equating to 600 injury fatalities per day [2]. In children, adolescents and young adults, accident and injury rates are even higher, being the leading cause of death in these age groups. Mortality from trauma in the EU has fallen 20 % in the past 20 years, to a rate of 63.7 per 100,000 in 2010 [3]. This reduction is par…
