Ash in composting of source-separated catering waste.

Our earlier experiments in small composters (220 l) indicated the favourable effect of ash from co-incineration of sorted dry waste on the composting of catering waste. The aim of this new study was to clarify further, at a scale of 10 m3, the feasibility of using similar ash as an additive in composting.Source-separated catering waste was mixed with bulking agent (peat and wood chips) and fuel ash from a small (4 MW) district heating power plant. An improved high yield method to obtain microsatellite genotypes from red deer antlers up to 200 years old.

Analysis of DNA from older samples, such as museum specimen, is a promising approach to studying genetics of populations and ecological processes across several generations. Here, we present a method for extracting high quality nuclear DNA for microsatellite analysis from antlers of red deer (Cervus elaphus). The genotyping of individuals was based on nine microsatellite loci. Because the amount of DNA found in antlers was high, we could reduce the amount of sample and chemicals used and shorten the decalcification time in comparison to other methods. Using these methods, we obtained genotypes from antlers up to 200 years old.

Increasing intensity of deimatic behaviour in response to repeated simulated attacks: a case study on the mountain katydid (Acripeza reticulata)

Abstract How and when deimatic behaviours are performed can change during encounters between predators and prey. Some predators attack repeatedly, investigating and manipulating prey, and in response, an individual’s deimatic behaviour may intensify or may diminish in favour of escaping. The presence of a resource can further force a trade-off between displaying and escaping. Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare neuromuscular disease caused by expansion of unstable CTG repeats in a non-coding region of the DMPK gene. CUG expansions in mutant DMPK transcripts sequester MBNL1 proteins in ribonuclear foci. Depletion of this protein is a primary contributor to disease symptoms such as muscle weakness and atrophy and myotonia, yet upregulation of endogenous MBNL1 levels may compensate for this sequestration. The deubiquitinase USP11 is a versatile and conserved regulator of autophagy

Autophagy is a major cellular quality control system responsible for the degradation of proteins and organelles in response to stress and damage to maintain homeostasis. Ubiquitination of autophagy-related proteins or regulatory components is important for the precise control of autophagy pathways. Here, we show that the deubiquitinase ubiquitin-specific protease 11 (USP11) restricts autophagy and that KO of USP11 in mammalian cells results in elevated autophagic flux. Hierarchical structure of the Sicilian goats revealed by Bayesian analyses of microsatellite information

Genetic structure and relationship amongst the main goat populations in Sicily (Girgentana, Derivata di Siria, Maltese and Messinese) were analysed using information from 19 microsatellite markers genotyped on 173 individuals. A posterior Bayesian approach implemented in the program STRUCTURE revealed a hierarchical structure with two clusters at the first level (Girgentana vs. Messinese, Derivata di Siria and Maltese), explaining 4.8% of variation (amovaФ(ST) estimate). Correlations of isokinetic and psychophysical back lift and static back extensor endurance tests in men

Isokinetic lift, psychophysical lift, and static back endurance tests are among the most widely used measurements of muscle function for determining risk for, and recovery from, back problems. After determining test repeatability we examined the degree of association between these test measures in 100 men selected to represent a variety of occupations and lifestyles. Isokinetic lifting had low correlations with test results for psychophysical lifting (r = 0.28) and static back endurance (r = 0.24).
